Cummins B5.9 (12-valve) swap into Oliver 1650 farm tractor

Thought you might like the photos. This thing actually fit (barely) on Black Bear Pass. Trailered the truck out behind the '06 Ram - 1600 miles straight thru. With a smarty, boost fooler, lockers, and an NV271 in low gear, this thing will crawl up a wall. Lets just say it was a lot better than the old 6. 5 TD or 6. 2 na I had out there in years past.

Sweet! Good to see pics of it out on the trail finally! I finally have started the swap on the axles I bought from you forever ago! Got the front one in, now I just gotta get the rear one it.

I actually had it done in January and took it up to Michigan for the snow run at Camp Grayling. Been a bunch of places since, but none as nice as Southwestern Colorado. Glad to hear you are getting your project together, hope that guys fingers healed (got pinched in the pivoting brake assembly? Ouch!

Cool, and yeah, Shawns finger is fine.

I'd like to do a 6. 7 conversion w/a 6 speed auto. , somebody needs to wreck a new truck so I can get a salvage deal at a decent price.

Haha, yeah that would be cool.

any more pics of the conversion. . ?

looks nice, Did you make it a regualr cab yourself?

I too would love to see more pics...

That's an OEM cab, Deo. The H1's were available with all kinds of cab configurations. Some of which are pretty rare...

(HT = hard top, ST = soft top)

2dr HT

2dr ST

4dr HT

4dr ST

4dr wagon (most popular civilian version)

4dr slant back

2dr ambulance

etc...

There were only a few engine choices, though. Military rigs only had the 6. 2/6. 5 engines. Civilians had 6. 2/6. 5/6. 5 TD/350cid gasser, and the 6. 6L Duramax (along with the Allison LCT-1000 automatic) in the Alpha.

Beers,

Matt - big fan of the H1s

Here are some pics of the truck(s). Basically I bought an '03 salvage titled ram 2500 that lot drove, and moved everything over to my '93 pickup. I labelled everything and figured if it worked in the Dodge, it would have to work in the Hummer. I kept the Hummers braking and hydroboost system, upgraded the hubs and halfshafts to 12K, switched out the differential yokes to 1410 (rear) and 1350 series (front). Ripped out the Hummers wiring harness completely. Only thing left to do is get the speedo working (in no hurry for that), and install a vertical radiator (custom job, sould be here shortly) allowing me to tuck the front winch in about 6" allowing a 90 degree approach angle.

I'm absolutely FLOORED right now after seeing the pics. You did a great job and had a very good plan in place to get this done. How do you plan on running a vertical radiator (along with the transmission coolers and intercooler... )? There must be some fiberglass/gel coat work in your future to modify the hood.

It's been a while since I've been around an H1 and your pics are bringing back good memories. (On edit: How often does a guy get to see 2-piece rims?! :D ) I used to go on trail rides with the New England Hummer Owners Group (back when there were no lame H2's and H3's) using my old '91 GMC Sonoma - I could go dang near anywhere they could with a heavy right foot and complete disregard for the integrity of my vehicle. :-laf I miss that old truck.

I have friends in New England (NH) with H1s and still keep in touch. I'm friends with Manny at www.Serious4x4.com and he mentioned that he saw your rig and chatted with you for a bit.

Again - AWESOME work and thanks a bunch for sharing the pics.

On Edit #2: Do you mind sharing how many hours (ballpark) you have into the swap? - it looks pretty intense!

Matt

Wish we had CTDs in the M1114s and M1151s in Iraq. Even without a Smarty, these things would pull their 12,000 lb. uparmored weight like a champ, compared to the turbocharged 6. 5 GM diesel (190 HP, crap for torque). As is, it will do 0 to 30 mph (48 kmh) in 6. 96 seconds and 0 to 50 mph (80 kmh) in 17. 84 seconds.

Agreed - I'd give either Manny or Peter the shirt off my back if they needed it - they're outstanding guys.

Wow - 4. 5" body lift? That's quite a bit for an H1. I know exactly what you mean about these engines being tall - I'm cramming a 4-cylinder HPCR ISB and Allison LCT-1000 into my Jeep ZJ - it'll be 2wd, though. :)

Have you looked into getting a 'Chevy style double pass' radiator? - that's what I'm going to get for the Jeep. They use 'em in drag and circle track cars. You can end up with both the inlet/outlet on the passenger side where you need 'em instead of having to use a big crossover radiator hose. Here's a link to the place where I'm going to do some business with - link.

I hear you on keeping a garage bay tied up for a year - that's why I'm over-spec'ing the shop I'm going to start building here in the next few weeks.

Thanks again for sharing some of the details of your build - its always good to see how other folks completed their projects.

Matt

All the Hummer motors pretty much suck (with the exception of the DMax in the '06 Alpha, although I decided a Cummins was a better, but more difficult choice). The 6. 2 and 6. 5 n/a's were reliable but way underpowered, the 6. 5 are TD's very prone to failure (#8 cylinder, PMD failures, overheating on long grades). Then AMG milked the 6. 5 out a bit longer with their 6500 Optimizer (from GEPP a subsidiary of AMG). I had 2 6. 2's and one 6. 5 TD and while the 6. 5TD has a lot more power, it's was the least reliable of the 3 trucks.

Amen to that. Our battalion had 6 or 8 crate motors sitting there ready to be put in trucks. I don't recall any of them failing on the road. We'd yank them before they got that bad. I really couldn't tell you how many we replaced (I heard a couple in a 11 month period out of maybe 120 trucks) , but the engines were there. That's actually standard practice with all engines in combat vehicles, and became standard with uparmored HMMWVs, which aren't technically "combat" vehicles like tanks and apcs. They can yank and replace the powerpack in a tank or bradley pretty quickly, as everything (wires and hoses) is QD.

Matt,

What kind of power (hp and torque) can you get out of a 4-cylinder HPCR ISB? Where does what get that motor and please post some more info on it.

An acquantance put a regular old 4BT in his 99 Hummer and I wonder how that could be improved.

My "ISB 170" has 170hp @ 2300RPM and 420ft-lbs at 1600RPM - bone stock. The same mods that work on the ISBe 5. 9 will work on the ISB 3. 9.

If I had a good offer on my ISB/Allison combo, I might sell it - everything's for sale for the right price. :)

It came out of a Workhorse P42 chassis - like a potato chip/FedEx truck - that was wrecked.

I think I've seen that 4BT H1 yank a Ford all over the place - good stuff. :-laf
