I replaced the pump with a HRVP, dropping the key down into the motor in the process, so I took the front cover off, got the key in, installed correctly, all put back together, all electrical connections in, good fuel pressure, bled at the pump and then injectors, fuel coming out of injectors where I crack them, occasional fire, but no start, and I have cranked a lot. Tons of white smoke coming out the tailpipe. What could be wrong? Keep cranking? Thanks

It should have started by now, and hasn't even though it fires every once in a while, sometimes far apart, sometimes 2 or 3 times in a row with a ton of white smoke. I think I probably have the vp gear 1 tooth counterclockwise on the gear that drives it. I hate to have to take the front gear case cover off again. Any suggestions? Should the electronic timing of the pump take care of that? Probably just wishful thinking.

The crank gear mark aligns with the cam gear mark and the cam gear mark aligns with the VP 44 gear all at once. If you are off a tooth or more it will confuse the computer and no go.

sounds like you have the key in right. sorry about hearing you dropped it, that sucks.

You may have a few cylinders with alot of raw fuel in them and others that still are not getting fuel just yet or just starting too. What are the outside temps there? where I'm going with this is, have you been turning the key all the way off and letting the heater grids fire too (wait to start light).

I'd say keep cranking on it for a bit longer. maybe give it some throttle input when/if it starts to catch. Just hold it about 1/4 open if you get to the point where it starts to try.

Thanks guys, I got it going. (Thread in help section) I checked the KDP, and it was recessed in the hole, and the edge of the hole appeared to be swedged enough so I won't worry about it. I figure if it hasn't rattled out by now, it won't. Besides, if I does, I can just about take off that front cover with my eyes closed now, LOL. (Although I was DEFINITELY not laughing at the time)

Thanks

I had to take the front gear case cover off again and move the injection pump gear back 2 teeth, because I wasn't paying attention when I put it back on.

Hey Tim, do you like the sound of that exhaust?

DPike,

I love my exhaust! It fit perfectly and with the help of my sawzall, I got the old factory system out in short order. I was a little bit worried that with no resonator and small muffler that it would drone or be fatiguing while on long trips. But you know what? When windows are down and I get on it, it sounds great... and when windows are up and I am cruising down the highway, I really don't notice it at all.

The hangers it came with allow it to attach to all the factory points and surprisingly, the turbo flange bolts came right off, although I am not sure how much of that had to do with me spraying them with WD-40 each day for a week before I did the exhaust.

I was just under the truck again doing my FASS pump and although the clamps have corroded slightly (as expected), the system is still shiny.

The only other exhaust change I anticipate having to make it switching to a different downpipe when I put new turbo on (in spring?)

IMHO -- 5" systems and systems with no muffler sound great, especially when other guys are getting on it accelerating past my house, but day to day this would be too loud for me.

Tim

I don't think there is as much salt on the roads in CT as in VT in the winter time, but I went with the 304 stainless system because of it's improved corrosion resistance characteristics over the 409 stainless. It was only $100 more (if I remember right) and seemed worth it to me. It was nice to have the choice between aluminized, 304 stainless and 409 stainless and in all cases the aftermarket systems are cheaper than an OEM replacement system, something that is key when selling the idea of BOMBs to your significant other :D

I had the key fall into the gear case on my truck too. It was not loctited in like it was supposed to be. Had to pull the front cover off to get the key. Front cover leaked the first 2 times back on, had to really clean it well before ever getting it to seal.

My first thought was that maybe you didn't get the key turned right because I understand that can be an issue. I made sure to match it up to the old VP that it was oriented correctly. Glad you got it running!
