I replaced the pump with a HRVP, dropping the key down into the motor in the process, so I took the front cover off, got the key in, installed correctly, all put back together, all electrical connections in, good fuel pressure, bled at the pump and then injectors, fuel coming out of injectors where I crack them, occasional fire, but no start, and I have cranked a lot. Tons of white smoke coming out the tailpipe. What could be wrong? Keep cranking? Thanks

I am guessing that I have the pump gear rotated 1 tooth counterclockwise. I think I am going to have to take the front gear case cover off again. It still fires once in a while, but it should have started by now, and there is a ridiculous amount of white smoke.

Yep, I took the gear case cover off (again) and the pump gear was off 2 teeth. How I did that is beyond me. Should be good to go in a couple hours.

Pictures of the gear alignment? I'm sure at some point I'll be doing an HRVP when my 44 bites it. Any help, especially, visual is always appreciated.

Hope the next post you make is "Success" and "Man did that HRVP to the trick".

Good Luck.

No I didn't take pics, sorry. But it is really easy, I just wasn't paying attention before. The crank has a line painted on a tooth, and the cam gear has to "V's" that line up with the crank gear and injection pump gear, and the ip gear has another line on it. When everything is right, they all line up perfectly.

Cool thanks. Never even looked at the shop manual yet - usually wait for a failure, check manual and decide if it's a thing I widh to take on. This one sounds pretty easy. So you're on line now and back in the saddle?

Congrats. Where'd you get yours? Did the old VP start throwing codes? Or did you just decide to give an HRVP a try?

Yes, the arrow was pointing towards the pump. I got mine through ETR Diesel Performance, it is an II pump. I had the 0216, and I got an occasional dead pedal pulling a hill with a heavy load.
