it's on the truck!

well i finally got the turbo and have had it on the truck for 4 days now and here are some thoughts. first of all the instalation took longer than planned due to the oil return line. fitting the new downpipe was not hard at all, and pretty much a "bolt up" turbo. ive been going easy on it to allow some time for the turbo to break in. ive had a couple of days to play with the turbo and let me say this thing rocks! spool up is darn near as fast a stock and it builds boost very quickly. the turbo has a awsome sound to it and its almost too much sound if you have an open air filter setup. this turbo barks very esaily. i am having some slight surge issues when the truck goes into OD, the turbo barks and bucks the truck for a sec. or two and then it smooths out. i think this may be happening due to the sharp drop in RPM's and the amount of air the turbo can flow is too much for the engine the ingest, so it comes back out of the compressor. the turbo may also be doing this cause it's not broken in yet, ive only put about 200miles on the the turbo, and it seems to be getting better. you have to re learn how to drive your truck because the turbo behaves differently from the stock turbo. once fund become available again i would like to put a BOV on there to help eliminate some of the barking problems. this turbo is very beefy. i feel i can take a considerable amount of barking, not that its a good. i will post some more once i get some mileage on the turbo and get the turbo broken in.

Wes. .

I wonder if the excess barking your hearing is due to the pressure not being able to be released thru the exhaust due to the smaller 12cm exhaust housing. If you add a turbo which spools a tremendous amount of intake air pressure and its not able to release it thru the exhaust certainly it will cause the pressure to back feed and cause the bark. If this is the case it could also lead to a premature headgasket failure and/or turbo failure as the pressure will need to be released at the weakest link. I have seen excessive drive pressures cause a "backfire" thru the intake vales and push out headgaskets or the bark snap the mainshaft on the turbo which is also fatal. I would be very carefull as you proceed... ... ... ..... Andy

andy - i doub that is the problem. althoguh it us called a 12 housing it flow alot more air than say a holset housing. they havedone back pressure tests and shown between 53-58psi for back pressure at 40psi. now i know that that is not the best, but im sure its way better than what i was running wiwht the stock turbo and the 16cm housing. i think its a compressor flow issue that needs to be addresed.
