Hi all,

I am a new member looking to do a turbo upgrade on a 1998 12V Auto. I only tow a ski boat with a camper on the back during season total weight no more than 6000 pounds combined. I am considering either the HTB2 or Phat Shaft 62 with supporting mods. I am looking to run about 400 HP. Can anyone recommend either turbo for my application? Does the Phat Shaft 62 have a bigger shaft than the HTB2?

Thanks in advance.

If you're looking to make only 400hp and want a better tow rig, I think an HT3B would be better suited to keeping EGT in check and would spool much faster than a B2 or 62. You'd probably even be safe with an HX40.

I use to run the hybrid hx35 which was 60mm compressor side, and 14 cm turbine side and it ran great until i decided to throw a little more fuel it's way. I upgraded to a 62 mm compressor side, and really like it. for the current conditions. i build up to 43 psi. and it is more than enough

i know a guy that got the htb3 for towing and he hated it. barely gained any egt relief. he said it was just louder. now he has the htb2 with an ats and seems to be happy. i think hes around the 350 hp range but he tows an 18k trailer for a living.

I am running the HTB2/62 and love it. I haven't heard if the Phat shaft is any better but I am sure they are very close in performance. Spool up is decent, could be faster, but it gets me the power and performance I want. :) I also do not know if the Phat shaft has a bigger, more reliable shaft than the HTB2, but maybe someone will chime in and fill us in, cuz I am curious about that as well.

Right now I am @ about 441hp with my current mods and HTB2, but soon to be @ 500+ with a little more top end fuel.

Thanks for the replys

I will have to research more on the internal differences between the two. I want to find out which one has stronger internals.

the phat shaft 62 does have a much stronger more reliable shaft according to the guys at industrial injection. they are really impressed by it. haven't tried it myself, but the claim it spools faster.

You are trying to say an HT3b is going to spool better than an HTB2 or Phat Shaft 62?

Are you getting some turbos mixed up with eachother?

I know an HTB2/14 can support 400HP on a 12v at right around 1300 degree peak EGT's. I think the 12 will spool and drive better at the expense of a little less top end and a slight increase in peak EGT's.

I'd bet the PS62 performs nearly identically.

Of course they would be impressed by it, they are the ones making it and selling it :D

Took the words right out of my mouth, Cooker. :-laf Sure is right though, of course they are going to give their turbo props over other manufactuers. I highly doubt that the Phat Shaft 62 spools noticably faster than the HTB2/62 being that a larger shaft is more rotating mass and will most likely take longer to get spooled up. Either way, they are probably identical in performance.

thats what im wondering... . are you sure you dont mean the HTBG from HTT???

I am going to install a Phat Shaft 62/12 tonight. I tried last weekend, but the oil drain tube would not bolt on without contacting the compressor housing. It looks like the comp housing was not clocked right. Strike 1 for I. I. I will re-clock and try again. I will try to post my initial impressions on the PS62 later.

I have a PS62/14 on my truck, and I LOVE IT, it is insane how fast this thing spools, and it keeps egts in check just as good as the "big" single I had before...

Also, about the drain tube, umm, yeah, it takes some work, simply reclocking the turbo will NOT clear the oil drain tube... I heated mine and "clearanced it" to clear the comp housing and the wastegate rod, then had to take a inch off the bottom of the tube where it goes into the hose, fits well now.

I have a 3rd gen, but I just put a modified PS 62/14 on my truck, which is based on the stout SPS 66 platform I had before. Read about it here

Currently using the HTT 62/14, very good spool with 150 HP inj. lowered temps by 200 + degrees, very towable, in my case I could have used the 64/14 and I think I would still have been happy.

I pushed my stock hx35 to mach 1. 6 and the comp still usable but not the most efficent set up and need to watch the temps, the mach 4's pushed it over the edge
