Competition Water Mist Injection on 400-500HP?

Off Roading Tires??

Dave and Loretta at Enterprise Engine call it "huffing" a turbo, instead of blowing it... To that end, I'd like to start a little thread here as a tongue-in-cheek way to honor those of us pushing the horsepower limits.....

In my case, count one Majestic-diddled Hx40 as huffed...

Stock, hybrid, diddled, fiddled, doesn't matter, it's all part of our endless quest for bigger numbers...

So, put it here, tell us how many you've huffed, and the circumstances if you feel like it.

I'll let Gene Mohney (MGM) start his own thread on crispy critter clutches, he probably has fried more of 'em than Dave Mitchell.

So far just one KwikSpool 12cm² housing.

And I think its only because I was hard on it at the strip, it would prolly survive on the "average" truck, but I have to have those 1. 91 and 1. 81 60ft launches... ..... I love them.

I'll post a genral recount of it soon, still trying to catch up on sleep and everything else. Truck is back together and running..... tho. And I must say it feels slow without that turbo..... not to mention I miss the whine it had.

I lost count of the number of turbos Dave "huffed". Last season it was about 1 per 300':( . I "huffed" 3 and my auto. transmission guy got 2=5 (that gave me 2 more reasons to scrap the automatic). Now that we've been running twins, we haven't lost one charger. :D I was getting really tired of R&R chargers and the $$$ going out:( . I haven't tore up my 6 speed either. It's been a pretty uneventful year if you don't count Dave's hitch, outputshaft, and driveshaft. Have fun with this thread!

WOW...the Mitchell clan!!!

Hey Kat any idea how much boost you were running at the time of huffacation.

No not really, all I can tell you is I was racing all day..... last run of the day (wanted a 100mph timeslip) so I launnched it pretty hard, and soon after going wide open throttle the turbo went "pop"... . and that was that. On the gauge it never went past 40lbs that I could tell. But the whole exhaust side of the turbo is gone... ... . except for the wheel.

Just a minor inconvience and a mess. . is all.

add me to the majestic bandwagon

i huffed an HX40 that had be fondled my majestic  , its sitting in a box next to me at work . majestic says my oil is contaminated ands it caused the failure , funny 2 other turbos had that same oil in them and they are fine ???

haven't figured out what to do with it yet , i know i was going to pay them to screw it up again .

kat i was getting lo 1. 9 60fts with alot less HP and an HX35 :p :D :D :D ...

Any 1. 8's tho? :D Told ya I am still learning... ... everytime so far I have gone back to the track... . I have gone faster. Tracks are closed for the year tho now.

Best 60's are 1. 88 and 1. 81 (a 13. 48 pass and 8. 4 in the 1/8th)

Put me down for an unmodified HX-40. Was driving rather sedately when it started howling, but it had seen a few runs up to 45 psi in its rather short 3 month life. It's replacement is doing fine... . so far :D

Had Majestic prep my Piers HX-40. 90 miles later on my first run over 20 psi the bearings spun. Majestic said failure was "lack of oil". Funny how my HX-35 has 110K miles, and is still at tight as new.

With the HX-35 12cm² back on, it seemed like it was choking the life out of the engine.

Bought a replacement 40 from Sportbike. I haven't brought the boost up past 25 psi. I don't want to bust it.

We need a performance turbo that we don't need to worry about when its going to let go.

Maybe KwikKurt's B-1 Bomber will be the ticket?

Mopar-muscle,

I have a 12cm² KwikSpool HX-40 turbine housing. I have not put it on yet*. If I don't get to it, I'll let you experiment with it if you want. I should be at the Dec 15th Dyno day. :)

* Trying to find a cover plate with a 4" Marmon flange outlet so we can just clamp the HX-40 downpipe to the HX-35 turbine housing. :)

3 hx40's here. I at about 54psi and 230ft down the track. One from lpg backfire. One bent shaft just because I wanted to be freshend up. Also another compressure wheel because the washer came off the backside of the lpg inlet point and rode in there for a while.

well adam aside from dave mitchell i think you are the guy to beat on broken turbos on one truck ... may i never break your record :D

bill , what are ya scared for , if you pamper it , its not gonna like getting excersied . i had mine on for about 15 miles and the temptation was to great , foot to the floor ... 40psi , i have since installed my DD elbow and it easily goes to 48 psi and holds , i'm gonna put my double hot edge on in the morning and see how far i can twist the needle past 50 ...

Mopar its not one of those things I really wanted to do:)

I know I'm not on the same playing field as the Mitchels but its nice to have been mentioned in the same sentance.

I hope none of us go through another turbo unless we just want to change. :)

Add me in for one. My very first Prototype Hx40 Hybrid. I generally Test new products past the point of breakage. I had run maybe 30 or 40 1/4 mile runs on and off the track. And drove it hard for three weeks. Then it let go on a fairly easy run. Holset analized mine and felt that a turbine blade flew Then BAM! Lucky for me the hx35 was at home just 10 miles away. Thirty minutes later I was Driving home in my Choked down Hx35 powered truck Calling on my cell to my TurboMachinest/Guru saying "It doesn't matter why it blew I Just Have to Have another ASAP" :D Kat knows what I mean!

The driviability and response of the Bombed Hx40 is great. But few turbos yet will stand up to drag racing, Pulling. We just need to find the limits of each one and try and improve on them.

HemiDart, I have just finally installed the latest version of the B-1 and all I can say is :D:D:D... . We have it spooling fast so tomorrow I begin the Torture testing. What will go first. . The Head gasket? (New as of Today!). Or the Clutch (SouthBend with "Very Mild Use" ;) ) used 40,000 miles and I have given up trying to break it so I can only sneak up on it with more HP!

Or maybe another Huff JOB. . But I seriously doubt it. Different versions of the B-1 have been used in other types of racing and it is the Tuffest built Turbo I have seen. IMVHO ;)

Keep in mind my #1 Goal is Drivibilty, Response & Max useable power Towing. IE: Lowering Egts ... More HP is just a side effect :D

I am going to try a different idea I have had to improve the Hx40's Turbine wheel and shaft. Then maybe KAT will R&D it for me... . ?

I got one last winter/spring at the drag strip with my 01, I guess running over 50 psi with a HX35/12cm shouldnt have probly lasted as long as it did. I'd say I ran it for 4 or 5 months before I blew it. Take Care!

I'll try to call you this afternoon once I get up, as long as its as good as that other turbo I had I'll try anything for you. I can't goto a track until springtime tho..... so no dragstrip testing.

I never did get any type of email from you.

Here's a picture of what happens when you blow the turbine completely off a hx40. Notice the gouges in the downpipe.

I hate to say it but you better add an HX-40 to the list for me. I'm not sure exactly what happened but it made a big bang and doesn't seem to be much left inside.

I had the nut come off of the compressor side of the turbo on my 87 Conquest. The nut was in unharmed condition laying in the air cleaner but the wheel and housing were TRASHED. Even with a smooth wheel it would make 4psi lol(can we say overspeed). Fortunatly for me the seals were bad also and the oil and scum in the IC and hoses caught a whole ton of the metal shavings. I drove the car for a month broken like that before I could take it apart. It was a good reason to upgrade :D put one on that was 200cfm larger than the stock one. Ran GOOD but never got any 1/4 times on it because someone borrowed it and wrecked the holy crap out of the car. I want another one it was a really fun car
