Just picked up the truck from a friend's shop after having the trans "freshened-up" (new seals, clutches, pump bushing) and a Hughes converter installed. Also had them put in TransGo's TFOD-Diesel shift kit and swap in a later flex plate while it was out. With the exception of a couple clutches that were burned very slightly, everything looked really good inside. As far as we can tell, the aluminum flakes I found in the pan were coming from the stock converter, and the brass/copper stuff I found wasn't excessive.
With the tighter converter and shift kit the truck drives much better. I can actually feel it shift, and there is a noticable drop in RPM (no tach
). It also takes less throttle to get the truck moving. Boost seems to come up a little quicker, too, and maybe even a little higher max PSI... but I couldn't get on it too hard because the roads are a little slick.
I'm anxious to get some more miles on it, and also to see how it does with the camper on or the Jeep hooked to the back - I'm betting there will be a big improvement over stock.
I'm leaving on a 3500-mile trip in about two weeks, so I'll have plenty of time to evaluate things.
