since i am not driving my truck this winter i took it into my shop to touch up rockchips left unattended by the previous owner. my truck is black and has never been repainter. there are hundreds of chips/mostly on the lower part of the box and rocker pannels. most are showing the white primer under and i want to prevent rust from starting so i am individually touching them up with a small brush. i dont want to spend all winter doing this and the truck is not ready for repaint any suggestions how to do this job faster. i am also spraying penetrating oil in crevaces like rocker pannels and doors in order to prevent rust. the truck is in nice shape and i want to keep it as my fishing and travelling truck only, so i hope to not drive it in winters. gotta get a beer and do more touchups. help me i dont want to become a worse drunk.

I had the same problem on my new '02 due to the rural gravel roads I hafta drive on - I used some spray-on rubberized Rustoleum stuff used for tool handles and such - here's what I started out with:

And here's what I ended up with:

And here's a shot of one side of the truck from further back:

This stuff comes in colors and clear, costs about $5 a can - it took me 4 cans for a good thickness - I went all the way down both sides of the truck - been on for a year and a half - still looks great, and no more chips!

Hey Gary,

Did you have to prep the surface at all. . ??? How. . ???

Do you find the color match to be good when in direct sunlight??

My 1st Gen is black over silver and I have quite a few rock chips too. . I'd like to clean those up and still have a good match with a durable finish.

Any tips???

My truck was pretty new, and a good finish other than the rock chips - all I did was wash the surface with Blue Dawn liquid dishwashing soap, and then wipe the surface with alcohol.

In outdoor sunlight, the color match is excellent on my truck - other colors may differ - the paint does leave a textured finish similar to some of the aftermarket bedliner sprays - so is a bit harder to wash clean, but the excellent protection against chips is sure worth it!

good idea fof lower part of truck. i am still dealing with lots in other areas. any hints on how to touchup and make the paint look uniform? no rust in most areas ,just white specks and chips showing. do any others use oil in body cavities to prevent rust?

I second the motion on the 3m stuff -- I've used it and it works great. Also have had an aerosol product called "gravel guard" that worked really well -- can't recall the manufacturer on that one. . .

It's a bottle and propellant that you can put any liquid in that needs sprayed, it is like a poof can that you can put the material into, they actually work very well for touching up things that aren't worth the hassle of cleaning up a regular paint spray gun. They have a website
