Got new trailer

So I need to haul a 12k lb trailer from Denver to Sacremento. I could go north to I-80 but looking at the map it seems like cutting across 50 would be shorter. Of course maps dont' give much detail on road conditions and such. I'm woundering if anyone has traveled that road and give me advise on it its worth it or not.

thanks

Steve

In the long run 50 is going to take longer, but it is a much more scenic drive. I always go this way when I go to Utah and I like it much more than I-80. The speed limit on 50 70mph which is better for fuel mileage and safer for towing. Also 50 gets alot more traffic than it did say 10 years ago, but by no means is it bumper to bumper. LOL

I'm leaving for Utah today on 50 and will return Sunday.

If you are not in a big hurry give me a call in Carson and we can have lunch. (775) 720-0515.

There is a sign outside of Eureka, NV that says "welcome to the loneliest town on the loneliest road in America". We ate breakfast there one morning and asked the waiter if the sign was true. His reply was "The Maytag repairman lives here. When he wants to have a good time he goes to Austin. " You ought to see Austin, NV.

Yeah Joe I used to live in Austin, nice place good people. I'm glad I'm headed out at noon today. You are makin me homesick!

Joe have you been just East of Austin? The Big Smoky Valley is where I was married, now that is really making me homesick. :{

Hey RankRam, thanks for the offer. I've got your number and I would like to have lunch or something along the way. although I'm not going until Labor Day weekend. If you're going to be around maybe we can meet up. Getting off the road for a little while sure won't hurt my feelings.

I don't mind the slower speed especially with the trailer. I don't have to be pushing it the whole way just to keep up. I don't think I'll break down or need assistance. I have alot of tools with me and a few spare parts so if anything does give up I should be able to do something. Unless its major in which case... However, I won't have problems finding Diesel out there will I? With the trailer the truck won't have the longest travel distance between fill ups. probably 300 max. But I'll prefer to fill up every 200-250 just to be on the safe side. My fuel gauge isn't acurate so I don't like to get too low. My only other concern is how flat is it? I-80 is pretty flat to say the least at least untill you get closer to Reno but I don't want to go across 50 and be up and down and up and down on rolling hills or something. If that's how it is maybe I'll take it on the way back when I'm not towing anything.

Thanks for all the info.

Sounds good Steve! I would recommend taking 80 out and 50 back since you are concerned about steep grades. Hwy 50 has it's fair share for sure.

About fueling the only places I fuel if I need to is Delta, Ut. then Ely, Nv. and Fallon, Nv.

Austin has fuel but I don't think it gets much business which to me equals old nasty fuel.

Keep in touch I'm resonably sure I will be home Labor Day.

(On Edit) I will be home Labor Day weekend, the boss informed me I will have lots of honey do's. So please stop for a visit Steve! :-laf

I've pulled my trailer on 50 quite a few times. Some of the grades are pretty steep, but no problem if you take your time. Fuel up in Fallon or Ely depending on which way you are going and you should have plenty of fuel. I think its about 150 miles between them.

Nice country. DON'T speed at night!! Might hit an angus steer in the road. Lots better than I80. Hardly any traffic.

Sounds good thanks alot. I think I'll take your advise RankRam and take 80 there and 50 back. I'd rather be safe and closer to help if I have problems with the trailer. Its only 60miles shorter according to mapquest so not enough to really make a big dent but sounds like an interesting drive for the way home.

If anyone else along the way would like to get coffee and I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER chat let me know. My truck is lightly bombed (ran a 16. 9 at over 5000ft) and I have a spare HT turbo stage III upgrade (hx40 compressor side) I could bring and people could check out if they are interested. I have one on my truck now. Also if anyone has something they could use hauled between Denver and San Fran let me know and if I can I'll help out.

If your going on Labor day weekend on 80

stop off in Reno Nv. at victoria street exit or rock exit and stop in for the Rib cook off It is AWSOME hundreds of rib cookers from all over America
