My brother just bought a pdr hx-40 for his 2001. He said I could have his stock hx-35. My question is would this be a good up-grade for my 93 d-250 vs. the stock hc-1? My truck has injectors and a 3. 5 inch exaust which I will up-grade to 5" stacks at a later date. I want 400 rwhp so maybe I should get a super-b but this turbo is free and has a waste-gate, how much better would it be? I can't afford a new turbo right now. Also how much better would the spool up be? Has any one done this up-grade:-laf

The HX35 is a straight bolt on if you use the H1C exhaust housing. If you want to use that WG'ed housing you will need to shorten the downpipe about 1. 25".

The price is right on it. Go ahead and use it.

Make sure it is an HX-35 and not an HY-35. IIRC, 2001 is where they started with the HY turbo. It has a much smaller housing and will be hot and stressed at the 400 hp mark. You will still need to modify the HX to get a decent turbo for 400 HP but it is easier to do. :)

The HX-35 will be a good upgrade, and if you can get hold of a 14 or 16cm collar you will not be disappointed. IIRC the wastegated collars are longer than the stock units and will indeed require shortening your downpipe. If you can, swing an ATS exhaust manifold, they are 100% excellent.
