If anyone has a good HX40 for sale I'm interested. I would even like to heas any HX40 comments on EGT spool up time drivability etc.

Thanks

Blair,

You'll need more than the stock fueling to wind up the HX-40. If your BD exhaust brake is turbo mounted, it won't work with the HX-40.

Search the archives under 'Monster Turbo', 'HX-40'. There is a ton of info on other mods needed to make the HX-40 work correctly. BD Power says you should have 350 HP before trying it.

IMO,The best place to get it now would be from Diesel Dynamics. I'm pretty sure its a BD Power or Piers modified 40 (double check). This is best choice for the novice do-it-yourselfer. No modifing neccessary. If you can cut & re-weld the wastegate linkage and clock the turbo for the Dodge/Cummins application, you could save a few bucks getting it elsewhere. The kit comes with the turbo clocked for the Dodge Ram, wastegate linkage re-worked to hook up to the OE Dodge actuator, V-clamp, downpipe, turbo oil return gasket, Turbo to exhaust manifold gasket & new bolts and spacers for the wastegate. Joe Donnelly sells the BD HX-40 kit too, for about the same price as DD. In a nut shell, everything is there. Use your 20% off discount on DD parts with an active TDR membership #. That will save $250 bananas right here. The 16cm2 exhaust housing is most popular. Again check the archives & current threads.

I would recommend getting it competition prepped @ Majastic Turbo. They balance & clip the vanes for quicker spoolup. I was very happy with the work that was done on my 40.

My HX-40 is sitting on the bench as I type. It will be going in the truck this spring. I have no experience driving with one. #ad

I don't have one for sale but can tell you about spool up. It's a non-issue with mine. I have a BD power HX40 turbo and it spools up real fast with the mod. s I have. There is no lag at the low end and the high end is unbelievable. I have to agree that your probably going to need some type of fuel enhancement for good HX40 response, it will probably be a dog at the low end without the assistance of bigger injectors or a fueling box, at the minimum add a Edge EZ or equivilant. If you don't have the BD 4" e-brake, your gonna have to upgrade as the down exhaust pipe from the turbo is 4". I think it would be self defeating to attempt to place a 3" brake into the loop with a HX40, it's meant to be used with a 4" pipe turbo to tail. With my rig, I see 40 psi's of boost at WOT, my turbo is wastegated at 45 psi's.
Hope this helps.

WOWZY
the phrase "clocking the turbo" means adjusting the turbine and compressor housings in correlation cartridge (center section) so that it can mounted on our Rams. There are certain model #s that can be clocked to fit without having to do any modifications.

I am able to run the 40 with just 275s and an EZ, yes it has alittle lag (maybe 400RPM) but at about 9psi boost when fuel kicks in, it pulls hard. I gain about 25HP from the turbo, at 250HP the truck runs well. The solution to lag with the HX40 is bigger injectors, Bigsaint can tell you this. I have injectors in my garage, if I had the valve cover in hand they would be in. I wouldn't recommend having the vanes clipped as this will increase lag.

Bigsaint
you should be getting more than 40lbs. of boost with those injectors. With my configuration I see 40psi, that is with the wastegate disabled

Blair, I would talk with Sportbike.
I've got mine from him. He did a SUPER job!
Everything ready to bolt on. ( And at a great price)It also came with an wastegate actuator, ready to use. Too bad, I've disabled the wastegate. #ad

Weircummin, I couldn't disagree more on the vane clipping thing.
My turbo has that thing done. All I can say is WOW! Turbo lag is only slightly more than
compared to the stock HX-35. Actually it runs much better than I expected!
Marco.

Thanks for all the help.

Marco, good to here from you. Both sportbike and Kevin at Majestic recommended that I not have the vanes clipped. On the HX40 the vanes have about 7 degree clip from the factory. Definitely contact sportbike and discuss your particular needs with him.

Thank You John

I couldn't believe what I was reading in this thread this morning about Kevin not recommending a turbine clip for a 40.

30 Days ago when I spoke to Kevin, he said the 40's really wake up after a clip.

I had steam coming out of my ears. #ad

A fellow BOMBER and I went to the Waco,Tx. location, about an hour from home. This place is amazing, the building is part of an old strip mall and they have been there for 19 years. Going inside you wouldn't think they could do the work they do. No high tech equipment there, just fantastic old world craftsmanship. Kevin and Robert explained all the different ways to increase the efficiency of a turbo. How about a HX40 compressor wheel on a HX35 with clipped ehaust vanes,it can be done but really wouldn't be worth the cost went you can get a HX40 from them for under seven. Clipping involves shaving down the back of the exhaust vanes to reduce back pressure and help increace flow. The comp prep is where they are able to reduce the weight of the rotating mass thus lowering the energy needed to turn it. This = more boost at lower RPMs. As Sportbike has suggested, anyone suffering from low boost should have this done. I'm headed back in a couple of weeks to have it done to mine. By the way, turbo reuild-$285. 00 out the door and the truck runs great. It had no power and smoked like crazy with that old worn out turbo

Weir,
Majestic 'clipped' the HX-40 turbine wheel. I should not have said 'vanes'. I talked to Kevin before I had the work done. He said the 40's really respond well the the competion prep. You & Sportbike highly recommended having it done.

Does anyone know why all of sudden & Majestic does not recommend the 'competion prep' on an HX-40 anymore?

If this is the case, Kevin will be getting a call & Majestic needs to replace my clipped impeller with an OE one. #ad
