 I am puzzled by what seems to be a large number of HX-40s blowing up. I need to add an ATS and a new turbo to get my EGTs back in line after the 370 upgrade. I am not comfortable with the number of failures that I've seen reported, I'm not too keen on droping a granade with the pin pulled under my hood. What are the causes of all these failures, and is there a better/stronger turbo for our beloved B?

Call Piers and ask him about his new "super tuned" HX35. Lowers EGT's, spools up faster, and more reliable than a prepped HX40.

On the other hand, I think the 40's are more reliable as long as you don't have it prepped. Or maybe it was a bad batch of 40's all together, I don't know what everyone eventually figured out.

The DTT truck has Piers new turbo on it, ask Stephan or Bill how much they like it.

Piers new Hybrid turbo is probably ok. Its probably not a High HP setup. It still does not address the corked up HX-35 exhaust housing and 3" outlet. 2 big resaons why we want to ditch the 35's. The HX-40 wins here hands down.

My HX-40 lasted a whole 90 miles. Majestic prepped it, but seems

it was bad from Holset. Put the HX-35 back on. I'm going to wait and see how the twin turbo kits are going to be priced. Piers is working on them.

Then again, passenger side battery re-location and other neccessary mods for twins don't thrill me. :)

Can't beat the simplicity of a single turbo. Install is a breeze.

Hemi,

I agree with your comments, but for the individual looking to got to the 40 to lower EGT's and not necessarily for bigger HP, Pier's setup is an excellent one, IMO.

the bone stock 40 is fine

I've been running a bone stock HX40 since Piers started that project almost two years ago. No problems. Auto Wurks Diesel's racer has grenaded two of them and both times were under a massive dose of nitrous oxide. They were upset by the sudden power swing and any turbo wouldn't survive that..... for long.

All the other HX40s we've installed have been fine. They got a bad name just like the Diesel got it's bad name in this country thanks to General Motors.

First I do have a pretty stout combo. The only time I was able to dyno it they could not load the engine, and I still showed 300horse. I won't know for sure but were thinking some where around 350-400hp @ the wheel. The only reason I ask about the blown up hx-40 is that I've seen many reports. If a stock unprepped turbo is the way to go then I'll have to look in that direction.
