Hx35 12cm need more input!!

:D

What do we really get when we buy a new turbo hybrid or modified? Is it replacing the pinwheel and bearing or what? I don’t want to spend $900 to $1200 on a new turbo when I can get the parts and put them in myself. I have a new hx35 turbo for a 99 24 valve. I want to replace the 12 housing and go with a 14 cm housing. The truck has 275 injectors, power max 3 with remote, 4 inch banks exhaust with banks 4-inch elbow, Scotty air ll, . Changing the pin wheel will give me back some low-end but not all of it but it will give me better mid and top end + lower egt’s. So can you replace the housing and pinwheel and will it survive? Has anyone done this?

What do you all think about a non-wastegated 14 cm turbo housing? Why have a wastegated and knot to have one?:D

Honestly I would just leave it alone. Nothing you do to the HX35 will tame the EGT of your PM3. Keep the responsiveness of the 12 housing, and keep the wastegate.

I agree with what Howard says.

You might as well buy a little ahead and go with a PDRhx40/16.

This turbo will give you near stock spool up, but when it does spool up hold on!! You will feel a big difference and your EGT's will be in check.

Or you can go the other route and get a PDRhx35/16 or hx35/14wg.

These turbos will flow a little more air.

If anything your 99's turbo is getting miles on it and could probably use a fresh rebuild or replacement.

Call Piers.

HX35?

I also tow a 9,000 lbs trailer, should I go with a pdr hx40 16? Do they make a 16 waste gated housing though? Do I really need a waste gated housing? Does a hx40 16 really spoll up like a stock hx35? I really need to take one for a ride

PDR HX 40-16

ProTurbo: I just drove a friend's truck which is virtually identical to mine. His has a PDR HX40-16, and mine is a PDR HY35 [the 'Nasty Nine'] .

There was very little difference in spool up time, since I was able to walk from truck to truck, I could detect a slight increase in lag or spool up time, but again, it is slight. About the same as a stock HX35-12 I believe.

The PDR HX40-16 is a 16 wastegated housing, and the tricks that Piers does to them makes a huge reduction in lag/spoolup time. Piers also balances everything and improves the oiling system. The stock HX40 has a poor reputation for longevity, the PDR turbos have a great rep.

I don't think that just bolting on a different pinwheel is a good idea without balancing and checking clearances, it would be a crapshoot whether it would hold together for long. JMO

Are EGT's really an issue for you? Do you tow with the box all the way up? If not then you are probably fine though a 14 would help some. However if the like to play around with the box on high then by all means step up to the plate and get a HX-40. you will get more lag but it will drop your EGT's about 200 degrees across the board. Good luck. :)
