Jake Brake install and Pro street turbo

New Valve cover all painted

I am going to try and build a set of twins. I have a ht3b and a stock 35 laying around. Figured i would buy a 40 but wandered how much difference it would be with a 35. Would it be a waste of time. It will be a street truck only. Its a 80's model chevy crew cab dually on 38's and will be ran with a manual trans. any info appreciated.

I'll bet it'll spool real fast. Definately need to run an external wastegate on that though. Someday I'll get around to building my set using a similar set up as your considering except I have a hybrid with an HX40 compressor on a HX35 turbine. For really big power, I've heard this set up will choke up a bit - a bigger turbo is needed for that.

Check out the Power by Poole website. He installs that combo, has pics on his website, and may be willing to help you. Ponz

It is a pretty common top turbo for those guys building their own or going with a lower cost twin (starter) kit. The exhaust side is not as free flowing as some of the later turbos, expect your drive pressure to be higher unless you install an external or modify your internal waste gate.

I know of one fellow (Got Torque from DTR) who modified his internal wastegate to about 40mm (stock is about 19mm I believe) and loved it. He also put a Banks Bighead wastegate actuator on it to keep the creep to a minimum. Last I read he had it wastegated to about 25 psi, set with the cold pipe removed.

Lance,

it's a fine setup, but the 35 does choke off exhaust flow. if you build it with an external wastegate right off the bat, you can overcome a lot of exhaust flow problems.

I ran a 35/12 - S400 combo on my red truck for a while, and it would boost early. with a big truck w/ big tires, the twins will be nice.

thanks guys, I didnt know if i would use it but i think i will try it now for my first set. Will a 40 comp. wheel fit right in the 35 housing or does it need to be machined? Thanks again

Lance

the compressor housing and backing plate have to be machined for the HX40.

I may have a dodgezilla 35/40 hybrid up for sale soon, but, for a mild setup, I say focus on getting exhaust flow around the HX35 turbine, you don't really need a 40 compressor for what you're doing IMO
