I have a few questions, so this is going to be long. I am getting to the point of having to replace the stock turbo on my truck. I am looking at the HX35 and HX40. Right now I have the HY35. I have read that the 01 CTD needs the HY35 becuase it has a faster spool up time which is needed for the automatic transmission. If this is true is there a possibility that the HX35 or HX40 will cause damage to the transmission. Additionally I have the Edge Comp chip in my truck, it came with a brass plug to replace the stock plug for the wastegate actuator that has a restritor orifice to increase boost. Would be instaling the restrictor orifice in the new turbo also cause transmission damage?

No, you'll see no transmission damage just from slightly increased boost, nor from an HX35 or 40. The smaller exhaust housing on the HY35 and the quicker spooling it provides are simply there for emissions, although it also makes for nicer throttle response. It's too restrictive though when towing at high throttle levels, especially if you've tapped the pump wire with the comp.

If you haven't tapped the pump wire, then your comp isn't increasing fuel delivery a whole lot, and so you could probably get away with the HY35. Otherwise you should be able to pick up a used HX35 relatively cheaply, or better yet go with a hybrid HX35. These are basically HX35 turbos but have the compressor housing machined just enough to accept a compressor wheel from an HX40. They have other mods to help them spool like a 35. I have a PDR hybrid on my 2000 truck and have been very happy with it.

I'd stay away from an HX40. There are combinations of compressor and turbine wheels, and exhaust housings that aren't too bad, but I think in your case it may be a little too laggy since you don't mention having bigger injectors.

No your transmission wont know or care what turbo you have. But with the new California Emissions testing I would stay with a HX35 with a stock exhaust 12 housing or the larger 14 housing. I don't think you could pass with an HX 40. There have been quite a few guys on here that have gone to the stock HX 35-12 from the HY 35-9 that came on the auto's.

thanks for the help, also one real nice thing about being in the Navy is that I am able to keep my truck registered in the state of Minnesota. Fortunately for me they do not conduct emission checks on vehicles. Will a K&N intake system I have for the HY35 fit on the HX35?
