Found this on the side of the road!

No, not really... it came off a truck that caught fire. But I did get it for free.

Broke it apart; everything separated fairly easy. No heat deformation; the fire originated in the cab, and was extinguished shortly thereafter.

Compressor wheel spins freely, however it’s missing part of one fin, and seems pitted. Also; there’s a fair bit of end play (I’d estimate 1/16” of endplay).

The wastegate actuator was corroded on the exterior; however it holds pressure and moves freely.

Replacing the internals was already part of the plan. That being said, what would be the recommended course of action? Source a genuine Holset rebuild kit / compressor wheel? Find an entirely new cartridge? The truck currently has an H1C (original). I’m under the interpretation that the cartridges are identical aside from the compressor wheel? Perhaps a better move would be to rebuild the original housing and swap a compressor wheel?

All that I’ve been able to find thus far are Chinese knockoff replacement cartridges... I’ll contact Cummins Northwest and see what is available for genuine Holset.

thanks,

jake

You do realize that like Cummins, Holset also has a plant in China. So if the rebuild kit has Holset symbol & proper name, it is most likely a genuine Holset kit. They take trade name & patents seriously.
That's why when you see a knock off turbo it says something like HOLESET on cover not HOLSET like a original.

I should have clarified what I meant by “Chinese Specials”

I’m seeing prices all across the board for “Holset” turbos.

Just spoke with Cummins Northwest, they do not have an HX35W rebuild kit, or at least according to the person I spoke with. Parts guy is going to work on individual product numbers for me, but I told him not to burn up a bunch of time.
