ive read the threads / post and can understand why not many like this turbo because of the small shaft (failure) but in a 400hp& under tow/ daily driver this dosnt look to bad (65turbine/ 60comp) it looks like it would run cooler than the stock turbo. 03 2wd 6spd pp/c3. 1/tst 3. 73 bomber light still perfect@146000 (vaughns old truck)

Many don't use it because the HE351 is a better turbo that bolts right in and is inexpensive. HX 40 old technology. I am happier than a pig in you know what with my setup.

yes the stock turbo is a good piece for some of the abuse they get. And I like the turbo that I have. but this hx40 came in the shop and it looks like if you didnt use it out of its range the exhaust would/could breath better. Whats wrong with old technology you could say that about the he351 now that its old with the variable/ twin turbos /twin compressors out there now. new technology got us into those great dpf exhaust that everybody is so happy with. :{

The HPCR engines can push a lot of fuel = heat to the turbo = fast spoolup at low engine rpm. This situation will be hard on the HX40. I broke them easily on my “uprated” 12-valve and on my 2004 HPCR engine. Furthermore, the compressor inlet is oriented wrong; you will need a special right angle adapter, and they are usually for 3” hose. Your pipe to the intercooler uses a 2. 75” hose. Then, on the exhaust side, the HX40 flange is too small compared to that on the stock turbo. You will have to get a custom 4” downpipe for about $170 and a $20 V-band clamp, replacing the stock iron elbow and 3. 5” downpipe. Then you need to adapt the new 4” pipe to your exhaust system. I don't recommend spending all that time and money to install a turbo that isn't a very good match to your engine.

thanks for the input guys this turbo is leaving the shop this weekend that will stop the temtation to install. I have to agree alot of work for a possible failure. joe Ive read most of your articles in tdr you sure have tryed a pile of turbos thanks for your experience. mike.
