All,
I have been in contact via e-mail with Carl Gross of Holset Aftermarket Division, USA about information regarding options for various turbos (HX35/40/55). He responded saying that any information released without inquiring about a certain serial number is propriatary. What I really wanted more information about is if we can get the HX40 with a smaller turbine housing or higher-pitched trim wheels for the compressor and turbine. I have sent another e-mail asking for more information about the HX40 VGT (variable geometry turbine) model. Has anyone had any success getting info from these guys? I would like to replace my existing HX40-16cm2 with a VGT model if there would be an adavantage. Thanks in advance. I'll keep everyone posted on the response from Holset.

Michael

Good luck, I've been trying to get info on that one for a while now. It comes on the new ISC 350hp but I heard you can't just give them a serial # & get a replacement, Cummins wants to change it out themselves #ad
I hear it does come on the 460hp Iveco motor used over in England & Europe I'm trying to get some info on it from a buddy that lives over there #ad
Carl if you read this post it will self distruct in 15 seconds #ad

Hey, Piers, here is the sequence of events:
1. everyone lets you do the research and finally get info from Holset etc.
2. everyone waits while you test several combinations and modifications until you get one that works great.
3. a few people buy from BD what you found.
4. a couple other vendors conduct research consisting of asking their Holset distributor to send them some of the same stuff BD has been buying.
5. a group purchase and/or reduced pricing is set up with one of those other vendors.
6. buyers get upset that the BD proprietary modificatons were not done, the part doesn't work properly, and they then expect you to tell all about it to them for free.

Piers, get cracking so you can keep all those other vendors in business with the latest innovations.

Welcome to the new world order via www.

Piers, Joe: Isn't variable turbine geometry something that's been going on with BMW in Europe for a while. If I'm correct, it involves some sort of mechanical/electronic monitoring to make the vanes change pitch. Any ideas if this is applicable to the electronic engines only?

Carl Gross gets a BIG high five from me! #ad
I sure appreciate your time and trouble Sir. It was very cool to have you attend the Tulare event. Sorry you were subjected to certain foreigners, our country's border policies obviousely need to be tightened up #ad

Years ago on a gasser turbo SVO Mustang I installed a Vari Turbo and what it did is changed the way the exhaust hit the exhaust blades. When it work it gave boost at a lower RPM but it didn't alway work and we replaced it with a conventional turbo after many hours of screwing with it

I'll see what I can find out with my Holset conection! They usually find what ever I need as long as I have time to wait.

Still testing the Holset HX40-35 compressor conversion. "Stabco Side-Kick" conversion. Will update as soon as possible.

Several engines use variable geometry turbines here in Europe.
Small displacement engines use them also.
It's nothing new.
What do you need to know?
I could find out.
Marco.

someone needs to get one of these to test. #ad

seems like it would be perfect for our higher powered rams if it works on the 350hp C's. Pull some strings somebody or find a wrecked bigrig to rob parts from. #ad

I'm way interested, just sorry I'd be dumping off a perfectly good, new HX40. And that wasn't cheap. But, the gains would probably outweigh the losses. Piers, you gonna test one soon? (joking)

Why do we have to go with Holset? If it's too hard to get, we could always look into the Garrett turbos. We can match up the specs from the HX40 (we all agree we like) to the Garrett. Look at this link and post what you think. www.egarrett.com/p-gt-3045.html The Garrett has these great options available:

* Turbine bypassing valving-single or dual bypass
* Boreless compressor wheel technology
* Mixed flow turbine stage
* Electronic bypass flow control
* Ball bearing technology
* Variable geometry turbine (VNT) flow control
* GT30V-GT45V double axle vane configuration
* Engine decompression braking compatible
* Advanced VNT concept technology available

Here is the link to the actuation and control options of the VNT: www.egarrett.com/g-innovate_vnt_pv.html

If Holset is so "propriatary" with thier turbos, I think we should look else where. Any others agree?

Michael,

I contacted two companys today about garrett turbo,s. Gave them info on what where using now, and what where looking for out of a new turbo. I,ll let you know what i find out.

Thanks SportBike. I got a response for J&H Diesel. He said to give him a Garrett part number, and he would check with Garrett. All I know is GT-37VNT from the Garrett website. I guess that wasn't enough for him. The GT-37 is an estimate of the power range when comparing the HX40 and GT37VNT (website comparison only). Below is a response I got from Carl at Holset, Aftermarket Div USA.

Mr. Murray,
1. The smallest housing for your HX40W turbo is a 16cm2. We do manufacture a 14cm2 wastegated housing which is fitted to a natural gas application that will technically fit your turbo, but the exhaust
outlet is configured in such a way that making it work on your Dodge application
would be very difficult to say the least. And the cost of this housing
would make it very unattractive.

2. In regards to the VG turbo... The HX40V is not yet in current production, and most definitely is not availabe through the aftermarket at this point. The features of this turbo will be nice, in that it will act
as a very small area turbine housing at low RPM, and then open up into a larger area turbine housing for the upper end. With all the added moving parts in the turbine housing of the VG, it makes the housing very
large, heavy, and bulky. I don't know if the HX40V will be able to fit very well
in the Dodge. However, further down the line, there is going to be an HX35V that will fit nicely. But, then again, it will be a few years before it is available through the aftermarket. So, to sum up, there are the two different area HX40's that you have mentioned... the 16 and 18. And, it will be a couple of years before there
is an VG turbo that will be available through the aftermarket to fit in your application. By the way, the current production VG turbos that are applied to IVECO trucks are priced in the neighborhood of $5,000. 00. Anyway, should you have further questions, please don't hesitate
to ask. Should you wish to call, my number is 901 546 5395 in Memphis.

Regards,
Carl

What about turbonetics?
They advertise a torque master turbo in the back of TDR magizine. Has any one tried this turbo?
What are the gain from it and the cost?

I think Ted J knows best about this but I'm pretty sure that its mostly a stock replacement.
Who can get Aerocharger to answer them? I've emailed them a few houndred times out they're variable vain turbos with no luck. But with all our members someone has to know somebody in the company. WE NEED THIS TURBO!!!!!!!! Think of it, the spool up of a 9cm2 with the ability to flow like a 21cm2.

I use an Aerocharger on my snowmobile, so I now first hand how well they work.
How about 210 hp and 135 lb, torque out of . 67 litre 2 cylinder?

I can now scratch the bottom of my feet while standing #ad

I have been thinking about giving them a call, I have a contact there.

Will let you know.
