Ok Im running a stock HY35 with my current setup of DD3's, tapped comp, 4-5" exhaust, full gauges, Haisley Anti-Defueler, AFE stage 1

I hit 1500* the other night with the box on 5x5, obviously the HY35 cant keep it cool with my injector choice. Ive heard alot about the shaft being "weak" on the HX40, what makes it "weak"... . ? shouldnt all the turbos have "weak" shafts or is it just because the compressor side of the HX40 is a greater ratio than others?

Im looking to reach 500+ hp (eventually) yet I want a good reliable fast weekend driver, will the 40 be a good choice for now or should I go to a larger turbo and wait for the hp to catch up? Would it work well in a twin setup?

lastly is the HX40 lag real bad? I really enjoy the spool up of my 35 but it hits spool up and "flatlines" I guess you would call it and the temps rise from there... the smoke is nice from start off with my 35 yet im worried without power braking to launch on a car/truck Id get smoked.

TIA

Ian

The 40 shaft is weak because of the size of the turbine wheel not the comp wheel. If driven sensibly an HX40 will stay together. It can move enough air to make 500HP but it can not keep it too cool. It will be very laggy as compared to your HY/9 but then again almost any charger that will support 500HP will be laggy as comparted to your little stocker.

Personally I would dump the idea of the 40 and consider a charger from High Tech Turbo or Industrial Injection. The nice thing with High Tech is the turbo can grow with you at a reasonable price as you increase your HP.

I am supprised you have only gotten that high. When I had DD3's and my hx 40 I could get her past that but slowly as opposed to the 35. I have had great lu ... nevermind I won't say it until the big heavy box comes UPS but let me just say that I have 40K on this 40 and countless Barks unpurpose or not. With my edm's and Box on death dust I can get up there 1670* and driveability wise I allmost don't want to swap in the Pius. The 40 to me spools like the 35 with 3's did and I know what ya mean there. But 500 from a 40 ... . I would start looking at things a lil bigger in the huffer department.

TMTT,

Is Pius up and running again? I know he had a ton of downtime both before and after his move. What turbo did you go with? A WSB or USB.

The HX40 is a great turbo for the 400HP crowd... . But when you want/need more there are several turbo options that will work wonderful for you. As mentioned HTT and the Phat Shaft turbos are great. Give us a call if we can answer any questions.

Doug

Get a Phat Shaft!

A 62 will do the HP just don't know were the EGT's would be, but a 62 would be a great top turbo in a Twin configuration. It all depends on were you want to go eventually.

BTW, I run a 66 in Twins

Jim

I dont think you can go wrong with either HTT or II, both are good companies with great reputations. I want to stay with a single charger and #2 only. I went with HTT because of the upgrade option, and i am really pleased. I would not hesitate to buy anything from II either. HTT's charger and II's injectors are in my truck right now and am very happy with both companies. Wait til you get that DTT... WOW Oo.

For the power you want to run, skip the 40. I am at its limits if I run really hard. Both by 40+ boost and 1400* EGTs.

I'm looking for something else myself. Will have to hold off for now, though. Hit a deer tonight. Missed the first one, bagged the second one.

Ok, so how about this idea, run the 40 for the time being then when i want to upgrade use it in a twin with... ... ?

the 40 is a great price so Im having a hard time turning away.

thanks again guys, keep the info rolling

Thats the same idea I had. My PDR HX40 should be here by Friday. I'll run it for as long as I can justify to myself that enough is enough, then when I finally give in to the fact that more power is better, I can buy the rest of Piers street twins kit. It uses the HT3B-26 turbo I believe. If you let Piers know you may eventually run it in a twin configuration, they can modify the wastegate now so you don't have to return it later (larger flapper on the wastegate).

I hope to have it installed along with the ATS manifold by Sunday, I'll report back on the inprovements next week :D

It is a stock or modified 40?

They are not that hard to find used nor are they normally that expensive. New Holset Super 40's are only $850 or so.

Chaz runs a PDR HX40

meet up with him and go for a ride in his truck so you can see for yourself

hx40 works well in a twin set-up with a ht3b

:--) You ok? Did the air bag go? Forrest

Thanks for asking. Yep, dad and I are fine. It was a tie. Deer-1, Truck-1.

The deer actually put her head down before I hit her. She went under the truck. The sheetmetal is OK, but the pass. side marker light assembly and bumper is junk, as is the A/C condensor and radiator. I think the CAC is OK, but need to pressure check it.

Got the radiator and bumper removed tonight after work.

Thanks again guys

Ian

well hes not been on TDR... ? no reply yet from my PM :( Ill call and leave a nasty voice mail tomorrow :-laf just kidding.

Bill did you ever run a 40?

Scott any turbo/fuel upgrades soon?

Ian

Sorry, no help here, I went from a surprisingly durable HY to the B1-2. However Greg Long runs an HX40 and he said mine spools about like his does. Our setups are similar, but I am not sure what gear he is running.
