The stock (no mods) HX40 I got from Majestic is working great, pull real strong. It is amazing that with the HX40 and my mods that the power doesn't fall off at 2700 RPM, it pulls straight through RED line and keeps going.

It is now time to depart with the HX35, if anyone is interested, email me, goes to highest bidder.

Isn't it safe to say that very very few of the "stock" HX-40's have failed? I think most of the problems being reported by TDR members have been with HX-40's that have had the "Majestic Magic" done to them, eg: bulleted ends, rebalanced, etc.

What's the word on stock HX-40's - has anybody experienced a catastrophic failure with one?

Greg

Greg. . there have been "stock failures" but they were at extreme boost pressures when they failed... My stock HX40 works very well also

I'm hanging onto the HX35. Not because I think the 40 size Monica is going to fail, but because of the twin turbo setup, after the warranty fails. #ad
I haven't read up on it too much, but I don't think the HX35 connected to the air cleaner is a beneficial combo, but sure would look good. #ad

Any comments about putting the HX35 on as a twin turbo are greatly appreciated. #ad

Big Bob & Hammong,

If you can get by without using your truck for a week or so, sell the HX-35. My HX-40 lasted a whole 14 days & 90 miles before the common shaft bearings failed. Most boost it saw was 35psi. Maybe yours will be fine. I hope so. #ad

This was a Majestic worked HX-40. 'Wiercummin' a member here visited Majestic the other day. There are 2 box stock, un-modified, Majestic sold HX-40's on the repair shelf with bearing failures.

Most HX-40 failures have been due to excessive boost pressure( 50+ lbs). You'll break the common shaft. None of the the recent ones have failed due to this. The bearings are the problem.

Not sure if they were bad from Holset to begin with.

I'm gald I didn't sell my HX-35. I'd be without a truck for a week now, probably won't see the 40 again till after Memorial Day.

My HX-40 is straight from Holset and I have to join in and say that I love mine. I made it bark the other day and it almost broke my heart (luckily didn't break the shaft). Anyhow, just wanted to give some more positive HX-40 feedback.

I've had my HX40 on for about 2500 miles now. My boost is set at 45 and no more. I was really leary at first because of the failures, however, now with this mileage I feel more confident that this HX40 is a good one.

I was just wondering what kinda turbo i have on my stock truck and what an HX-40 is?? where do you get them and how much do they cost?

HossDiesel,

You should have the same turbo that I took off,(if your truck is stock)it is a HX35 with a 12CM housing.

The HX40 is a larger turbo (pushes more air) with a larger exhaust housing (16cm).

BOMBers with heavily modified Cummins use these turbos for two reasons, 1. ) to keep EGT's in line and 2. ) to push more air, for more boost, for better performance all the way through REDLINE. Most truck with the HX35 see a drop off in power after 2700 RPM's. The HX40 keep right on pulling!

I'm not sure how much they are now, the price has just gone up in the last month. I bought my HX40 before the price increase for under $700. 00 from Majestic Turbo.

Interesting failures. I wonder if Majestic is changing the bearing style now or if it was a bad lot of parts.
I have a pair of T4/T3 hybrids built by Majestic's outlet in Irving, TX. No problems there. I also know of several other turbos they built. This bit on the HX40 is the first I've heard of failures from them.
High bost is probably spinning them around 130,000 RPM or more. If the balance isn't perfect, it will kill shafts and bearings. Same goes with the wheels. If a blade isn't perfect, it's coming apart.
Has there been any feedback from Majestic on these issues?

I've had my STOCK HX-40 on (came from DD) for about 1500 miles, and it's working fine. I'm only making 30 psi with it, which is the same I was making with the HX-35, which has me wondering though.

Rob
