This one is for the turbo experts. I currently have four stock HX40W:D with the following Cummins part #: (2) 3591020 - ISC, (1) 3591023 - ISC and (1) 3538221 - ISL 370HP. I tried doing some researh on the differences but I have limited access to the parts computer:confused:. Can I use one of these:confused:? I have a 96 EGR model and would like to get at least 300HP out of it:), limited budget:( . This is my list of upgrades and order I plan to follow: K&N stock replacement, No EGR Intake, Gauges, Cam plate #??, HX40, 4" Exh Sys, Trany. I'm in San Diego and looking for a good trany place for a BD or DTT installation.

300HP should be pretty easy to make. A plate and injectors should get you in that neighborhood. A governor spring kit kit would help even more.

I did have a GSK in mind but after reading about the HX40W failures I left it out of the list. The turbos I have came at no cost so I like to take advantage of at least one. I also have two sets of HD 60lbs valve springs if I ever go with a GSK.

I'm also a little wary of athe HX-40's hearing about all the ones blown apart on this site. The way I drive my truck, I would huff it before I got it on the truck.

I dynoed my truck in January 2000 with just the stock plate slid forward and pulled a 283 rwhp on a DynoJet. With the addition of the plate and injectors, this thing seems twice as fast. I'm waiting for the new clutch to go in before I dyno it again. No point in paying for a dyno with a slipping clutch.

P Madrid:

I have a "Piers Harry Modified HX-40" (www.piersdiesel.com)

and am VERY happy with it!! He takes the "stock" HX-40

and modifies the oil galleries to better help lubricate the

shafts, balances the shafts and does "censored" work to

the exhaust housing to help it spool up better. I can tell

you that it spools up ALOT better than a stock HX-40 as I

ran mine both ways. I would recommend calling him @

1-866-888-9396 and giving him your part numbers. He

can then tell you exactly what you have. I also highly

recommend sending the one you decide to run and let

him work his "majic!" The cost is very minimal for what

you get and since you have very little $$$ in them you

would still be ahead.

As far as the HX-40 "blowing up"... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . I

felt the same way as you and "gitchesum. " And believe

me I run my truck VERY HARD!! Ask anyone who knows me.

I am confident in this HX-40 Piers has modified for me!!

It has been on the truck for almost three months now

and so far, so good!!

Hope this has helped you some!

Good luck!

I've got the stock HX40-16W, no problems. I did a shaft wiggle a few weeks ago ... still tight. I've got the elbow adjusted to 42psi so as not to stress things & I don't run it hard. I don't remember how long I've had the HX40 now, maybe going on 2 yrs.

The #0 plate is going in this weekend & I'll have to make sure it doesn't go over 40 or 42psi with all the extra fuel. It's definately going to be over fueled. We be smokin'. Oo.

I seem to be having super luck with Piers HX-40 turbo. I bark this baby all the time. Ask the poor dyno guy that was standing next to it when it barked at him last week.

I cant break it. I heat it up to high temps daily as well.

Gotta have that HP fix at least once a day.

The modified 40 is hangin tough for me even with abuse.

yep, Ive blown a few up too, but not the Piers modified 40.

Don:

Thanks for posting about Piers' HX-40!!

I KNOW you and I are are "putting them to the test"

and as I said, "so far, so good!" I have accidentally

"barked" mine too!!

My thanks to Piers for the excellent job he did

on "modifying" these turbos.

Barking turbo's? Anything like barking spiders? (nevermind)

I'm sure I have herd one bark before... ... but just in case... . I don't suppose you could make a WAV file of one doing that? It would sound cool as a windows "critical stop" sound on my computer! I have a WAV of a ISB starting when my computer starts up. :p

T. Baker:

The term "barking" a turbo means there is a reverse

flow of air going through the turbo. An "example" of this

is when you are under acceleration and you let of the

accelerator real quick and the turbo makes a "woofing"

type sound. Generally, it will do it three to four times in

row until that air flow slows. Some say the turbo shaft

is "spinning backwards" but it is only the airflow.

Hope this has helped some. Sorry, but I don't have

a "sound bite" of it.

Thank You, John P, I was also wondering what a turbo "bark" was and what cause one. I finally got my truck today. Tomorrow I start playing with it: ck injectors, get rid of the EGR, ck plate (stock?, position?), compression test, adj waste gate to 30psi (for now till my gauges arrive), R&R Exh. Man. and service transmission. I'm going to run one of the stock HX40W, making a down pipe for it. As soon as I get a responce from Piers I'm going to send him two, one for my truck and another for an ISB. Thanks to every one that answer back.
