hydraulic winch run off powersteering pump?

has anyone did it on a dodge?i want to run it on the back of truck. i think maybe tee the lines then put quick couplers to change direction of the fluid. back to winch or to power steerig. but it has them fittings with o-rings on them. i already own two hydraulic winches. a6000 and a 12000,both worm gear. both tulsas,thank you

I met a guy that converted his 1st gen to hydroboost brakes and it runs his winch also. His handle is kiszka6911 on 1stgen.org. I'll go double check that. Not sure where else he is on.

For the hoses just go to a farm equipment dealer with a sample of what you need the ends to look like. I have made up ends for fuel line, air brakes and more for guys. If I had the fittings and the hose I would do it an dnot much goes over 3,000 psi. As for the couplers, I would discourage that as you will lose fluid everytime you disconnect them and it will be such a pain, while you could easily install a valve that would handle your direction along with the line moving. As for using steering pumps I do not know what the operating pressures are on them if it would be enough for you, but I have seen old Dodge Snowmasters? that hade two extra power steering pums on them to operate the snow plow.

Kiszka's truck had electric solenoids on the winch for direction. I think he said the oil went to the booster, PS, then winch. All the old ('70's) Meyers snow plow pumps were just PS pumps with a different housing, remote reservoire (sp?).

I thought about putting a PTO on the trans for my trailer winch. Then just used the motor that it came with.

Aftermarket companies already make a kit to run a winch off of the ps pump. Locate one of those. and they could probably sell you an install kit. IIRC, they also use a priority valve for the ps and brakes.

what do you torque with a 10k psi hydraulic wrench?

big stuff! most of our customers were oil/gas... some of those big pipeline flanges have some big nuts!



largest square-drive is 2. 5"... makes a 3/4" square drive look like a baby.



biggest hydraulic torque wrench I've seen does 80,000ftlbs at 10k psi 2. 5" square drive on that puppy

I have the MileMarker 12,000 winch on my truck, its hdyraulic and it hooked into the powersteering/hydro-boost system. You replace the hose coming out of the hydra-boost going to the steering box with one going to your winch imput and the output on the winch goes back to the steering box. My valves are on the winch. It works great, I use a stick to get the idle up just so I won't show idling my engine. The winch is slow on low speed but has plenty of grunt. I pull logs out of the woods a lot and have pulled a few Fords.

i am the one who started this post. well i worked it out. i took off the high pressure line. and cut it in half. then took it to a hyd place. they put 3/8pipe thread ends on it. then i put a 1/2 inch line going out of pump to a diverter valve. then the other side,one going to the steering box and one going to the winch valve. then i just swith to the one i want. and the winch is a 12000lb tulsa. and even at an idle,it just wont stop pulling,i have a gooseneck trailer36inch high deck. and i can pull my boom truck on the trailer even with the boomtruck in first gear and the engine shut off. it pulls excellent. also on the return line i just cut it and put a tee in it with no shut off. when i first started messing with it ,i had a hard time bleeding it but now its done. thanks for your intrest.
