Your Workbench...

OK, I'm nearing the point in my shop addition project where I need to plan for the in-floor hydronic heat boiler. I've always assumed I'd be plumbing natural gas out there and buying a high-efficiency gas fired boiler, but now I am thinking about electric boiler options. Looks like the electric boilers might be a lot cheaper. Have not yet called the electric co to see what type of discount they offer when used for heating purposes. I'm going on an assumption that they do have electric rate discount when used for home heating purposes. If not, then the obvious choice would be gas - I think.

Anyone have experience with electric boilers? Is this a logical alternative that I should look into or am I asking for more trouble or cost this way?

Shop/Garage is about 400 sq. ft. , 2x6 construction, and fully insulated.

In my small shop I use a small tankless electirc boiler and it is expensive. Gas water heater might be an option or an outdoor furnace which is what I am going to switch to.

Amish. . got any hints you might want to share in the forum ???

following thread as I'm going to be heating a 50x60x16 shop in Cd'A,Id... snow/cold country

any info on the outdoor stuff. . a link maybe ?

I have an oil fired hot water boiler in my home, other than the annual spring cleaning and maintenance(new filter and nozzle) it is very efficient. My home is 2200sq. ft. , boiler is 85,000 btu's. Each gallon of #2 produces 140,000 btu's, I burn on the average of 2 gallons per day. When I build my new shop :-laf it is what will be heating it also.

Too bad youre not around here. We have entire retirement villages changing over to gas.

Oil fired hot water boilers are being removed in truckloads, not to mention the fuel oil in their tanks. :-laf

I got payed $300 cash to take away a nearly new 275 gal above ground tank. I ended up giving the tank to a friend who's tank was all but disentegrating as he was using it. Cheap ba$=@$d didnt want to pay my fuel and tolls to deliver it 100 miles.

Try to save a buddy some $$$... ..... :(

I had always planned on converting to natural gas(more convenient),but with the price increases it has experienced I no longer see the advantage. :(

Sorry, Willy. I just saw this again.

I dont know about advertising rules here, but my company makes Tankless Electric Water heaters and boilers; primarily for commercial industrial uses. Some residential. We dont stock pile these and send em out by the thousand. Every one is built with a customers name on it. Specd, built, tuned, and shipped with your needs in mind. Built in west Michigan by fellow Americans from the best components available. Been doing so for 19 years. "Toot Toot. " (There goes my horn again. :-laf )

We go all the way up to 144kW/~490,000btu single units if you've got the power to run it. Freeze protected models are rated to -23ºF w. 15mph sustained wind. Mount em outdoors? No problem. Since sizing is so important, we've got a few sales engineers that could help you size one. Even if you're looking at going another route, we could get you in the ball park with what kind of capacity/size you're lookin at. PM me if I can help.

Electricity not as overpriced as it once was. Energy as a whole is expensive, but the savings between NG and Electricity just aren't there like they used to be. Especially if you can make up the difference with efficiency. We do electricity because most of our customers want tight temperature control.

No matter what you end up with, I'd advise investing in good insulation for whatever your project. Energy costs dont seem to be going down any time soon. Extra dollars spent on good insulation will be investments that easily pay off over time. Try and keep as much of that heat as you can. You paid for it.

Happy to help my TDR brothers if I can. Oo.
