On the way to a gmc dealer to have engine looked at. Before I made it, rod was thrown

thru oil pan into starter. Tech says it is toast. What could have caused it? Two weeks

earlier engine was fine. Only fault with engine to my knowledge was a possible low oil

pressure issue ( instrument reading was always the same 20-25psi, 25 at start up, 20

when warm and going down the road. I could use a little help here. Thanks AndyB

Out on a limb here, but generally, the main webs crack in the vicinity of the outer main

bolt hole. This can lead to crank failure etc.

Mine went at 118k. I got a lot of "razzing" over it etc, but it is actually not to

uncommon. They fail in stock trim OR modified. I rebuilt and split another one in 6 k

miles but this one only cracked the block. I redid again with splayed main caps tp span

past the weak area and no problems since.

As for your oil psi readings, while low, it could have just been gauge/sender issues.

Unless backed up by a mechanical gauge, I'd not treat that TOO seriously. It is also

possible that one of these cracks got to the cam bearing(s) and allowed them to dump

off high pressure oil heading to the mains/rods.

I recall reading posts on this by gmdieseltech about the harmonic balancers failing

and causing unbalance that breaks cranks and cracks blocks. That's something to

look at.

Just to be clear........

I do believe they're talking about the 6. 5 turdo diesel, not the d-max. The 6. 5 is a notorious rod chunker! I have several customers that have thrown numerous rods. It's my understanding it's even usually the same rod. What a fine piece of craftsmanship :p

It's not the 6.5

Sounds very familiar. I am pretty sure they are

referring to the old 5. 7 diesel.

At first I thought they were talking about the

Duramax but they have not been out long enough

to get that many miles! :D

yes it is the 6.5

I know the guy that is in the post. He is talking about the 6. 5 TD. he went through two or three engines i think. I just blew my 6. 5 up right on christmas eve. I am going to do a conversion and power her with a 12V. No more 6. 5 for me . I will take my engine out and paint it up and detail it and put a glass top on it and make a great coffee table. I Swear I saw the 6. 5 in better homes and gardens... ... ...

Well then..

Turn that junk crank into a mailbox post! :D

I had a '94 Chevy K2500 with the 6. 5TD. Back then

it was the 5. 7/6. 2 that was having bottom end probs.

I didn't know until now the 6. 5 had similar

problems.
