Engine/transmission for Freightliner MT45 step van?

Hello;

I'm a housewife, not a mechanic. So, I understand if this elicits laughter.....

I own a 2001 Durango and I want to know if it's feasible to have it converted from its gasoline 5.9l to a diesel. If so, would you please direct me to such a company/resource?

Thank you so much.

Just sayin'.......:-laf

Did you do the Banshee conversion that Stacey David did on "Gearz"? That thing has to be crazy.

However, Cummins is introducing a small 4 cylinder Diesel specifically for conversions that just might be dandy.*
It won't be cheap, and depending on where you live, it might not be legal.*
There are Diesel SUV's out there like the old Liberty CRD, Land Rovers from Britain, and I believe Chevy is coming out with a small diesel SUV.*
Basically, this is a desirable vehicle idea, but thanks to the US government, not very tangible.*

You guys assumed too much:D.....She didn't say 5.9 or even Cummins, she just said diesel, there are a lot of small diesels out there, but yes it can be expensive.

You beat me to it! I was going to mention the little 2.8. I bet it would be nice in a Durango sized vehicle and probably return some good mileage. I know the only thing I don't like about my diesel Liberty is the size......Durango sized would be nice..........oh, and the 2.8 Cummins is claimed by Cummins to be 50 state emissions legal.

Untill a Smog referee ok's a swap..................

My take on what the OP was asking is:

Can my 5.9 gas engine be converted to run on diesel.

The short answer is no.

The 5.9 gas engine is completely different from the 5.9 Diesel engine.

Gasoline requires an electronic spark to ignite the fuel, diesel requires high compression to heat the air in the cylinder hot enough to cause the fuel to burn.

As others have said a 4 cylinder Diesel engine is coming to market that could be installed into your Durango but it would be expensive.

Better for you to look at a new Jeep Grand Cherokee with a diesel option than swap out your 5.9.

In California the engine swap has to be same year or newer,Have ALL the smog gear the donor engine was built with and be from the same weight class vehicle. The Cummins site gives no dimensions.doesn't say what type of exhaust if any comes with it if any.Lots of road blocks. The power nunbers tell me it is more of a mileage engine than fun power level.Who volunteers to be the first to try it out in Cali or other like restrictive state.

The funniest part is the op has never responded to any of this discussion.I needed something to take a break from opening 2 recon ecm boxes only to see both had been previously installed and unuseable

Just to put it out there... I'm a Project and Program Manager for a living and, when asked such questions, my response is always the same: Anything is possible with enough money. And... you have available for reduction: time, cost, and quality. Pick two
