1) PRICES being 21-22% higher than gas.

2) SMOKE & obnoxious particulates & nasty fumes filling my familiy's lungs EVERY morning.

3) HARD STARTING in winter combined with very poor cab heat. (Unless you work it hard, there will never be excellent cab heat in a diesel. Unfortunately in my line of work the truck just tools around at low speeds (30-45mph) from job site to job site all day.

This begs the question:

How difficult would it be to swap the Cummins out for a gasser like a Hemi or something? (My transmission is the NVG5600)

Is it practical or is it just a bad idea?

Has anyone done this?

All opinions are welcome!

Thanks!

Mike

Just trade it on a Hemi ... ... ... ... no sense cobbling up a 2004 truck.

Yeah, but it would make for a good 4BT conversion, since it's got a NV5600. Might not be very fast, but you'll be working it harder and getting killer fuel economy. A fun project, to boot!

Really though, trading it in is the cheapest, fastest option. Chevrolet just announced 6-year, 0% interest on all their vehicles except the Malibu and Corvette IIRC. Good way to get a cheap gasser and free money...

Me, I'm keeping my diesel. I learned my lesson after selling my '03. I was back in another diesel 6 months later.

Give it time, the fuel crisis will be over. No, it won't go back to $1. 50 a gallon (be lucky to se $2. 50) but the developing countries like India are going to run out of money to subsidize their fuel markets (and things like fertilizer, which have gone up over triple since 2006) eventually. Tthis story was written in December, and prices have gone up since. Indian fuel prices | Too hot to touch | Economist.com

never mind the price of fuel... why did you get a diesel to begin with?

Okay, I didn't want to be the first to ask that question but I am interested in why the diesel was his initial choice?

The fuel prices were not an issue at the time the truck was new, but the emissions and heat issues would have been.

If heat is an issue install a cab heater. Reacting to the current price of fuel will cost you big time. A person who gets a hybrid will never recover the cost from fuel economy increase in almost all cases. It is better to keep what you have and wait for the market to do it's thing unless you can do an even swap.

I Drive A Ford F-250 Superduty For Work And It Has A 5. 4 Gasser, It Gets An Average Of 17mpg Hwy And About 13 Around Town, Its A Dog But The Heater Works Great And It Gets Abused Daily And I Cant Break It, But Even Though It Might Get The Same Mpg As A Diesel It Doesnt Even Come Close In Comparison To The Capabilities Of A Diesel So The Price Of Diesel To Me Is Still Worth It, I Also Bought A Little Car That Gets 30mpg To Help The Fuel Bill, The Car Pays For Itself In Fuel Savings Alone

I have no trouble with heat in the cab. Need to check it to see if your valve is opening all the way!! If you are only putting around in town put a cover over the grill and watch your heat gauge. Adjust the cover as needed.

Price here is about 15% more then reg gas. Smoke,Hmm don't have a answer for that but mine only smokes when I pound the GO pedal hard. Hard starting well when it's down around 10 degrees or so I plug mine into a timer for 3 hours run. Put on a jacket till that iron block gets warm.

Mine gets 17-21 mpg,can pull almost anything I want, and with care should run 500,000 miles or so. No half ton will do this for me and a big block 1 ton will be lucky to get 12 mpg so that runs the 15% lower fuel price in the ground.

As said before if you want a gasser trade it in. Plenty of deals out there now all the makes are a hurtin. Good luck with ever way you go.

My dealer wants every 5. 9 they can find to put on their lot.

You should be able to make a great dealership bargin for yours.

They're not admitting to it, but those who shop around a bit are quickly figuring out that nothing in this size/weight range gives the mileage of a 5. 9.

I have almost the same truck as you and don't have problem numbers 2 and 3 that you listed. My truck can roast me in the winter with the heat up and it starts right up every time up here in Michigan. I only plugged it in once all winter. Sorry to hear about your bad luck!

The Big 3 have taken the "truck" out of a truck enough already ... ... ... ... ... . in order to please the "I want a truck so I can look cool" crowd ... ... ... ... ... IMHO:D

I dunno boys, sounds like a troll.....

I wouldn't trade either one of my trucks for any "hybrid" on the face of the planet. I knew from the get-go that something like this may happen, and I'm going to drive them till the dinosaurs come home!! :-laf
