I remember the 2nd Gen guys saying that about the common rail engines when I bought my truck in Jan of '04.

I also felt pretty smug about getting a truck with no cat or 3rd injection event.

It seems they have all turned out to be good engines.

I've just picked up on the valve seat problems with '03-'06's. I'll take the kdp or fifth gear nut over that any day. At the end of the day it's all relative to your point of view.

I was skeptical at first too but it looks to me like the only problem was cured by a re-flash. That emmissions system is rediculously complex but from what I have read on the 6. 7 forum the flash has cured the regen problem. The milage they complain about will get much better with age IMO. I think the 6. 7 with the 6 speed auto is going to be a winner. I also read here that the valve seat problem doesn't extend to the later 5. 9s and was cured with the '04. 5 "600" version. When they fix one that has had the valve seat problem, they use and '06 head. I personally find the '06 to be my ideal year. The headlights and seats are better than '03-'05 and I like the interior better too. I also have normal looking tailights, not the '07 and up chevy bubble style. None of them are perfect, certainly not the 2nd gens. The Cummins is awesome in just about any form and the trucks improve all the time too.

Don't all that have had valve seat problems, also have stacked power adders?

Maybe one or two were stock, but got one injector stuck open and took out one cylinder. Also, those who bought used trucks, have no idea if and how their engine was abused before, so they cannot be used as a guage of the reliability of these engines.

I have looked at pictures of the Cummins sectioned engines, the 03, and the 04. 5, and the 07, and I see no change in the size (depth) of the valve seat. If they were inserted deeper than the valve lift, they would never fall out, as the valve would push them back in.

Some aftermarket seats have undercut steps on them, and require very cold temperature to contract and get in past the step, and the heads need to be heated up at the same time. I don't know if anyone makes those for our engines.

I had new truck envy till I started hearing about the regen problems and low milage. Now, I'm very happy with my 04. 5. I truely hope all works out for the new models and that my fellow members have many many good years of service from them.

fisrt year motor... first year problems. Its still the best work truck available. it will even be better in a year or two.

There was a thread on here that shows the dropped valve seats have been found in the newer 5. 9's also... Here it is https://www.turbodieselregister.com...ons-2003-2007/175019-dropped-valve-seats.html ..... My mechanic has a 2006 with a dropped valve seat... My mechanic took my2003 head to the machine shop to have all the valve seats removed and insert new ones with really tight specs... Hopefully I won't have that problem anymore... I think that the 04. 5's and up have not been out long enough to be dropping seat like the 03's... Wes

I envy their e-brakes. My old mans is unbelievable coming down a grade loaded or even empty. The e-brake on my 04's(BANKS) dosent even compare.

Man just drove a new 07 with the 6. 7 n 6 spped auto what a truck rides smooth and takes off like a darn Rocket hit the freeway and before end of ramp we hit 80 easy I will deffently being buying a new one once mine is sold deffently going for the 6. 7 don't get me wrong the 5. 9 is a awesome motor but I think they did good with this new one . I guess we will all see as they get older ??????

The 3500 SRW 6. 7 68rfe I drove is an awesome truck. I can't wait to drive it loaded. It feels like a sports car in traffic compared to my 06 QCLB.
