Hey guys,

I was messing with my computer. When I open my brower the window is only 3" wide, but fills the sceen vertically. I can drag it bigger, but it won't stay that way once I close the browser. The button next to the red X in the right hand corner works fine.

Try this

With only one IE window open, minimize the window. . Then right click the minimized window down at the bottom and select maximize. Close (Big Red X) and reopen the window. Does it now open to the full size?

Couple of things, IE "remembers" the size it was the last time it was closed. Also, certain applications will affect the size of the IE browser the next time you open it. I have a CD with older style games on it like Centipede, Asteroid, Missile Command etc,, and any time I open IE after playing any of these my browser window is set to about 1/4 the full size. Perhaps you have another program interfering with IE. . I know of no way to fix this one except maximizing the window after every time someone plays one of these games.

I tried what you said Randy, but after I close the browser, it open back up at 3" wide, full vertical length.

I started to turn off stuff I don't use when reading this web page. This is when it happened. I turned everything back on but it's still doing it.

I turned off almost everything this guy said to. Do you see anything in the tutorial that would cause it:

I bet I forgot to turn something back on.

ok

I see nothing in that link that would be causing this. Have you tried clearing out your cookies, temp files and temp internet files?

Was any software installed just prior to this problem being noticed for the first time?

Another possible option

This link is a discussion thread about the same problem you are having. Towards the bottom there is a link that will take you to a site where you can download a free program called IEWindowsMaximizer which is said to fix the problem you are having. I can't venture an opinion about it as I haven't used it but it is another option.

This bugged the hell out of me....

THANK YOU RANDY!

I downloaded the maximizer. I worked but I had to look at the 3" window for a second.

then somebody in the link you showed me said "Resize the window as suggested above and then hold down the Ctrl key while closing the window"

I did it and it worked!

Glad I could be of assistance

I didnt' fix the problem,, I just found someone who could! :)

I used to work as a Level 2 computer Helpdesk Technician before I started managing a helpdesk. When you run into a thorny issue, Google is your friend cause SOMEBODY SOMEWHERE has had the same problem. . It's just a matter of finding that somebody. .

To fix the problem without downloading anything, follow these steps:

1. Close all browser windows except one.

2. Drag the lower right corner of the window until reaching the desired size.

3. Close browser window with the red "x" at the upper right corner.

IE will remember the setting.

I'll second the FireFox suggestion. Plus, I sure like the auto spell check in the new FireFox, and the tabs, and the new close tab button, and the speed, and... . ;)
