Over the past few days, I've been working on my Dakota which I recently picked up. Our area now uses salt during winter like the medwest and northeast. Working on a vehicle is no longer fun/relaxing. I had to cut both shocks to replace them, replace all the brake lines during a simple shoe/wheel cylinder change taking about 4 times as long as is should. Salt on the road should be illegal for so many reasons other than corrosion such as road/bridge damage, environmental reasons, water supply contamination. Just venting my frustration, thanks.

I agree. Heck, out my way they now "pre-salt" on the prediction of snow or ice. Three problems:

1) Most of the salt just bounces off the road. The rest of it ends up in the sipes of your tires and flung into your wheel wells.

2) Many times, the predictions are wrong and no precipitation occurs.

3) Think of the cost to the tax payers in wasted salt, fuel, overtime, road wear, concrete/rebar damage.

The solution is pretty simple, people need to slow down when it snows. We don't need completely bare roads.

Skip the salt for all the sighted reasons & use studded tires!!!

To show you what idiots there are in WA, each year there is a movement to ban studded snows due to the damage they cause roadsurfaces. I don't think the studs cause 1/100th the damage salt does to the concrete. Speaking of this, does anyone know the verdict of why the bridge in MN failed this year? Would be interesting to find out how many thousands of pounds of salt where applied to it over the past 28 yrs. but this is of course the big elephant no-one will speak about as it would force a change in this horrible policy of salt on roadways during winter. Our state alocates based on previous yrs amount used so you can imagine how excessive it's applied. **** they apply it one days with no precipitation. I could go one forever.

The Cedar Rapids road department got busted by a citizen, then by the DNR, for getting rid of its leftover salt by dumping it on gravel roads after winter was over a couple years ago.

Last year, they ran out completely with 2 months of horrendous ice and snow left to be faced.

Seems they don't get as big a budget if they don't use all they have, so they were spreading it stupidly way too early in the season.

What kind of wasteful way is that to care for the public's money. . ?

Here in PA they mix coal ash with the salt and by the second snow everyones got a tan colored car for the entire winter. Ive seen 5yr old trucks with rotted out rockers. The worst Ive seen is anything from Ny.

I've had every new vehicle I've purchased done at Ziebart immediately. Without exception, they have had zero rust issues. I have spoken with others that claim they have still had problems. But personally, it has been worth the investment and the time to have it done.
