After using the search function and checking the FAQ section I still came up empty handed so sorry if this has already been beat to death. Is their any special coolant that should be used? Is regular green ok? I have some CAT ELC premix would that also be good to use?
CAT ELC is the coolant to use. You can buy it as a concentrate rather than paying for a half gallon of water. Test the coolant once a year and forget about it.
I use the standard yellow Prestone. You can use any type anti-freeze, but if changing to a different formulation, you MUST flush the system very well. The different typs do not mix well.
Very good info. For those that are just using green are you adding in any type of addative? I have heard dont know if its true that the Cummins doesnt have the cavitation problems other diesels have, something about its not a wet sleeve design I belive is what I heard.
The ISB is a parent bore engine (no wet liners) and is not prone to cavitation. Therefore, it does not require DCA (diesel coolant additive).
You can use a low silicate ethylene glycol coolant and be fine. If you wish to upgrade to one of the newer extended life OAT (organic acid technology) or HOAT (hybrid organic acid technology) coolants, that's fine as well after a thorough cooling system flush.
My '06 required Zerex GO-5 HOAT coolant, the '01 required only ordinary old Prestone as Rusty wrote above. Not sure about model years 2003 through 2005.

FYI, Dodge switched over to the GO-5 HOAT with the 2003 model year.
For listing of the recommended coolant, system capacity, normal drain/refill quantity, and specification for Cummins 5. 9L Turbo Diesels from model year 1989 through 2006, see TDR Issue 54, page 157.
