So I have started to develop a howling noise that at first I thought was the intake as it was a faint howl like a mud tire frequency but now it has become much louder and annoying. I rebuilt the turbo, changed the water pump and the tensioner pulley to no avail. It sorta lags rpm and changes frequency with rpms. The howl is also apparent with the hood up sticking my head in it and bliping the throttle. Could it be the cooling fan clutch or cp3? I dont think it's the boots but it may be. Should I pull off the turbo side boot and see if that maybe has a leak. I just don't see how a hole would produce that frequency. I have uploaded a quick video so hopefully that could help.

Do you have the plastic tanks on your intercooler? If so then thats a common failure point.

I hope its somthing cheap!

No I have the steel ends on the intercooler. I might make something to pressure test the system. Do you plug the boot at the intake elbow? I have seen some do the test without but I would think the air would go into the cylinder through an open intake valve.

If I really get on it, the howl changes to a much higher pitch, almost like a squeal. I wish something would just tip me off as to what it is so I don't have to keep guessing and replacing something that isn't the problem.

Take the serpentine belt off and run the motor. At least you will find out if it's on the front of the motor or someplace else. Oh I didn't see it was an 04. You probably have to have the belt on to run it.

It doesn't do it when its cold. After it set all night, this morning it didn't do it. The temp got up to about 160* before the howl was back. Would this more than likely be the cooling fan clutch?

lol, Yeah I need that CP3 spinning.

The cooling fan hub is what i am thinking. Mine makes a howl real bad cold but then quits after 5 min's or so but still does it everytime I start it for a few seconds. Mine seems to be fluid related. Mine locks up and then releases after sitting. There are bearings in it which could be getting hot and making the noise on yours. But then again does it sound like the fan is engaging. When it's making the noise turn the engine off and see if it turns by hand easy. If it's hard to turn then I'm thinking it's engaging when it shouldn't be. Do this as quick as possible it doesn't take long for the fluid to settle or what ever it does. Oh SHOOT is your fan electric engaged if so that won't work for you. But your fan could still be engaging early for some reason.

CP3 is gear driven, so I'd imagine you could run it for a short time with no belt... but you'd have no fan or water pump, so it would heat up pretty fast.

I think it is the turbo making that noise.

Gibbs-- Does your truck have turbo whine? Our truck is the same as yours and it has turbo whine.

Our 03 has the same symptoms as ImpelledRAM. When it is cold it's quiet, and as it warms up it starts to whine. Ours has done that since new and when the motor is hot it really whines, especially going through the gears. You let up on the throttle and it quiets down and you speed up and it starts whining. We have always assumed that was normal for this turbo. Keep us posted on what you find out.

Applegator, I haven't noticed the howl or whine on my truck. It does have a strange rhythmic rattle at idle, though.
