Oh Man I am fit to be teyed. I just got my clucth done 150 miles ago and I was hauling my tractor to a job site and 5 gear gave away. What is the derictions on on this, or where do I find them? I need my truck to make a living this time of year.

OK I Went to D Frizts site. I know what I am doing now. But the directions said to pull transfer case and then pull the adapter! Can I just pull the adapter with T-case? or is there a reason for this.

Subject: NV 4500 Manditory Repair

Paul;

The NV 4500 Transmission as used in General Motors, Chevy and Dodge Trucks form its introduction to 1995 suffer a design problem in the 5th gear lock nut retainer. It is probable that during the life of the NV 4500 Transmission, the 5th gear retainer nut will loosen and allow the final 5th Overdrive Gear to fall off the shaft. When this happens SERIOUS damage will happen to the Overdrive. The more miles the transmission has, the more apt the fail to occur.

The update to eliminate this problem is a new 5th gear Nut with a newly designed retainer. The retro fit requires special tools and can not be done properly without the special tools. All Authorized New Venture Transmission stations can make the retro fit. The cost which includes a modification to the output shaft is $250. 00, Two Hundred Fifty Dollars.

All transmissions modified by New Venture Transmissions will have the words "NEW NUT" stamped into the case by the top left Overdrive

mounting bolt. If these words are not there, consider the transmission as unmodified and a serious threat of failure.

I hope this answers your question on the 5th gear nut failures.

Sincerely

John Malone

Found problem

It is apart!! The nut is OK. The internal sprockets are gone on 5th gear??? How did this happen.

The output shaft of transmission and input of transfer case shafts are worn. They look like sloped splines. they have a very sharp edge on top. kind of looks like l\ I thought these were more square?

Any suggestions????

Is the wear on the shaft just on the transmission shaft or is it worn in the transfer case as well? The transmission realy should have a new "fully splined" mainshaft as is available from these guys. This mainshaft is fully splined under fifth gear to prevent it from stripping again and has a nut retaining system that will keep it from coming loose.

problem #1

The wear shaft of the transmission and transfer case shaft as well.

Problem #2

The nut is one tight still. The gear at the lower left side of the out put shaft, I think this one is 5th. there are teeth inside of this one. when it goes into 5th the fork pulls a gear over this one to engage it. the teeth are gone from the inside of the this thin gear, how ever the shaft looks unharmed.

You stripped the spline from the inside of the fifth gear on the countershaft then. Forgive me but it's been a while since I was in one so I don't remember what order those pieces go in or exactly how to get them out. Do I remember a snap ring on the end of the countershaft that I had to remove? I know you have to drive the two roll pins out of the shift fork and slide it off with it's corresponding syncros but I can't remember if you need to remove the mainshaft nut and fifth gear to do so. The people at the link above should be able to get you those parts as well.

As for the weear on the splines I don't know. I have replaced a couple mainshafts but that's only half of it and I've never been into one of these transfer cases. I hope you find someone of more help.

I took my transfer case to a local shop for rebuild.

The transmission needs replaced. Do I stick with a 5 speed or for $1K more I can get into a 6 speed. What to do. I think the 6 speed would last longer, but I don't know. Any comments QUICK!!!!

From looking at the old transmission there is way too much torque in 5th gear. That 1/4" wide gear is too thin.

For $1000 more, I'd definitely go for a 6 speed; not so much for the extra gear, but because it is nearly twice as big as the NV4500. Saw a comparison of the two in the magazine a while back, and it was just incredible, the difference between the two. The extra size and mass will definitley come in handy when you tow. I'd go for it if my Getrag goes out, but I have the problem of speedo attachment... ... :{ Coupled with the cr@ppy fornt end, it would be a great excuse to go to a 4wd conversion; I have a rear driveshaft off one... .

Keep in mind that your cost to swap will be more than just the $1k difference in the transmission - unless you are getting a quote for $1k for the entire swap. I believe you'll need a different cross member. I know you'll need different driveshafts front and rear, a different clutch (unless you are getting one of the early 6 speeds), etc. The cost of the swap is more than just the difference in transmission prices.

The cross member will work, so I am told. Drive shafts will need adjusted $150. Perter @ south bend is tradeing clutches with me. I do have to get the shifter and other hardware for $200 extra.

I ordered a 6 sp from Blumenthals, he said it was NEW, so I keep my 5 sp transmission, mqaybe some one will want it.

DSiemens, now your box is full. mine is empty for once.

With help from brother we got the 6 spped in and is running again. I sure like it allot better for pulling trailers. I just have to get use the the shift pattern.

Thanks for all the help every one. installation was a snap.
