Well folks, just thought I would let you know how much I love my new first gen. I've owned cummins diesels for going on ten years now, and have progressed up through the different years, and have experienced quite a bit with these trucks, both good and bad. I finally got tired of the high truck payment of the '06 AND high fuel prices. So, i sold the '06 and bought a 1992, single cab D350 flatbed with a 5 speed. 140k on the clock, and I got it for $2500 cash. I just got back from a trip to Austin to pick up a car and have to say I was blown away by the performance of this truck! With a few conservative pump tweaks, a 366 spring and a bhaf, i was able to maintain 75-80 mph over any of the hills through the heart of the Texas hill country. The best part was, this truck drove way better than the 2006 megacab with 40k miles it replaced!! Between that, and averaging 15 mpg loaded (that's what the megacab got EMPTY!!) i'm tickled to death, and proud to be back in the first gen club!! why did I ever sell my first '91 I owned??

Your main points are reasons why even though it would be possible to own a 3rd gen, it would not be preferable/economical. If I want a plush ride, I'll take Anne's Honda.

The first gens were new on the lot when I was in college. I couldn't afford one then... but wanted one so bad. I worked summers at the local Dodge dealer. We had a Ram D350 Indy 500 official tow truck and I just loved driving it. They still have it and use it. Its simply the best tow truck ever!!!

Anyhow... my first was a 99 quadcab 2500. But eventually I sold it and got my D250. To me... Dodge Cummins means 1st gen.

My friend just got a new 08 6. 7L Big Horn 2500 with exhaust brake and everything. I wouldn't want it. :) Nor his TITANTIC payments.

Amen about the payments. I just can't believe how much a truck payment is these days - for a "pick-up truck"... ya know? I personally love my '93 - it is my second 1st gen, and I'll never own any newer Dodge truck, and definitely never without a Cummins. I've got maybe $12k in my truck and it runs just as happy as could be, gets 20 mpg, has good A/C, and I particularly love the visibility and interior of the 1st gens over anything else.

1st gens forever.

I agree about visibility. I have been driving a seconded gen for a while... . Holy A pillar batman. I don't like it.

You ought to try it at 5' 11" with factory buckets. Same cab. :{

try 6'4"... with buckets!

I did it for almost 2yrs... if it had been a manual transmission, I would have never made it! LOL!

I love the square bodies, but they're HURTING for interior room!!!!!

I bought an '03 single cab in Feb for $7k... it was clean as a whistle and ran GREAT with only 200k miles on it. a single cab 3rd gen I can scoot the seat all the way back and lean it all the way back and I can't comfortably grab the steering wheel! :eek:

I loved that truck... rack and pinion steering, great mileage, no cat from the factory, tons of power, etc.

I don't get the problem... I'm 5-10 and I think it's perfect. Very comfortable IMO. Different strokes I guess. AMybe it's because I have 2wd and don't have to worry about hitting my head on every bump.

You could be 10ft tall and fit in my first gen, but the MPG is a little low, but if you are any heavier than Pete Toombs you could get wedged between frame and engine looking for the elusive shutoff lever.

On a serious note without this forum and the folks willing to talk the less informed (me ) through all the steps that keep the old iron 1st gens alive and getting better, most of them would be gone. (OK there are other forums too. )

To repeat my history, I bought a motorhome that wouldn't do better than 40 miles per hour on an interstate. The salesman told me that was pretty good for a Diesel. When the price got lower than a good rideing mower I bought it. Now it will take me and a towed car anyplace I want at good road speed and 10mpg.

Knowledge is Diesel power. Thanks to all.
