Wiring issue or brake issue?

Who still makes a 5th wheel hitch for our trucks?

I'm a former 1st gen owner, and in the past I've owned a '90 and a '92. Those two trucks had a combined mileage of just under 450,000 miles. Neither one of them ever gave me any major problems... In January of 2009 I became the proud owner of a leftover 2008 3500 dually. It now has 23,000 miles, and I'd like to chronicle the problems so far:
1) The anti-theft stopped communicating with the truck, which caused a no start at 14k miles. This left me stranded twice.
2) Both batteries had to be replaced at 20k miles (one no-start).
3) Back to the dealer TWICE for factory recalls, one for hardware (steering stabilizer) and once for software (recalibrate the re-gen software).
4) At 21k miles the clutch started slipping. I was told, by Dodge, that a clutch is considered a "wear item" like wiper blades, and wouldn't be covered by warranty. I replaced the stock unit with South Bend clutch/flywheel at a cost of almost $2000. 00 out of my pocket. There was nothing wrong with the old clutch. The dual-mass flywheel had been the culprit, the two halves were slipping by each other (this WOULD HAVE been covered under warranty, if Dodge had diagnosed it correctly the first time).
5) The tailpipe is already so rusty, I'm waiting for it to fall off.
The truck now has 23k miles, and I'm wondering what's going to be next... Keep your 1st gen trucks, I sure miss mine.

Brian, Stop dancing with the Devil. The First Gens are calling you back.

Dodge, for some reason they thought they could improve on perfection.

Yup. theree is a reason I own 2 first gens! :D

Dont give em up boys (and girls!). They are a unique vehicle and nothing holds a candle to them. man I love my truck. :)

This truck, quite literally has TWICE the power of my first gens (when it runs). It has MUCH lower emissions, a factory exhaust brake that's just outstanding, it gets better mileage and the ride is way nicer than the 1st gens... But at what cost? They've sacrificed the steadfast reliability of the Dodge/Cummins partnership. I still have complete trust in the engine, but not the truck around it anymore.

I'm getting around 14 or 15 mpg around town, which is slightly better than the 13 I got with my '92. On the highway the new truck beats the old by at least 2 or 3 mpg. My 1st gen gas pedals were almost constantly on the floor, this truck doesn't need to be mashed to get out of its own way... So yes, the 2008's mileage is better than my '90 or the '92 (not by much, but it is better).

First Generation, baby!

Regarding mpg: San Bernardino to Santa Barbara in rain, with 1500 pounds, 28. 61, freeway only. Around town including So CA grid lock, 20mpg. Truck runs well have replaced: lift pump, rear axle seals, belt tensioner, water pump, battery, front brake pads, one rotor, IP has weeping now and then-Oh, oh  Who said I love this truck:-laf

Patrick.

I was getting 24 on a regular basis with my 91 (5 sp), could get 25 + on a highway trip.

I miss my 1st gen too, but it was so rusty it was not worth keeping.

Yup. Also in the 22-25 mpg range. W250 5 speed. As an auto it bested 18 mpg. Nothing else changed.

Dads 6. 7 did 17 stock. gets about 20 now.

My 93 will not get below 19 mpg around town. When I had my 2008, I put thousands, and I mean THOUSANDS of dollars into improving fuel efficiency, and I only was able to bring it up from 14. 5 to 18. 1 MPG around town. The 08s are good trucks in my opinion, if you remove all the crap that you're not supposed to remove, put an edge on there so it runs with proper injection cycles, and are not allergic to higher fuel bills, etc. Honestly, the best truck I have owned to date was my 95. Don't get me wrong, the 93 is good, but the 95 had most of the advantages of the 93 and also had most of the advantages of the 97 and 01. 5 as well.

I love my '06, but when I needed a daily driver, I jumped at the chance when I found a clean '91. 5! They are both amazing trucks, but have a completely different feel. I usually say I end up liking the one best that I'm driving at the time!! I would have a hard time giving up either one of them.

I'm a ho'. I'll drive whatever I've got running at the time. I love my '93 and '91, and my '03 is outstanding(after daylighting a piston and rebuilding the engine). But I'm partial to my '97, too... ... the DewEze flatbed gives it an unfair advantage, I think. For mileage the '91 and '03 both get 20+ on the highway. The '93 and I are about to have a "come to Jesus" meeting. It's gonna go my way, or it's gonna meet Jesus!!! :D (And get a NV 4500!!) I bought a couple new '07s for the ranch, one being a 6. 7. I think my butt-cheeks are still chapped on that deal..... finally got H & S to help me, and they sent me some ointment... . err, I mean help. And mileage went from 12-14mpg to 18-20 on highway. It uses a lot in the pastures, though. I can burn a tank in a long day, where the old 12valves only use about 2/3 tank!! The 5. 9s are running strong, though. Still, I just like the 1st gens. Simple and tough... ...

Yep, love my First Gen. I tell people it's more of a fast tractor with power windows. No doubt that you're riding in a truck. Mileage: was 20/24 with the LSD, now 18/20 with ULSD. Wish we could go back to the old stuff that was around when my '89 was born.

I sold my '92 in 2000 to purchase my former '01. It was a red over white W250 ext cab with a red interior, leer cap, full length running boards, etc. I really didn't think of that truck until lately. And now, everytime I see a 1st gen on the road, I miss it more and more. I think it had something like 61K on it when sold it. What a fool I was for letting that one go. Of course, it was already starting to rust in places when I sold it. There probably wouldn't be anything left of it by now.

I had always heard stories of high mpg numbers out of 1st gen trucks, but mine never came close to any of those claims. The absolute MOST I ever got out of either of my 1st gens was 19 mpg. That was empty, downhill on the highway, at 60 mph with the wind at my back. Granted, my trucks were 4x4, but I can't see a 10 mpg difference between 2 wheel drive and 4. What am/was I missing?

Not quite sure, which is why I posted what I did on the first page, thought maybe yours was a gasser !!!!:-laf My current W250 , with way more power then stock gets right around 18-19 around town , and the same on the hiway @ 70 MPH average. First one I had years back got 20+ no matter where or how fast I drove it !

I had a 93 D-250 that got 19-24 depending on how heavy my foot was :D

My 92 W-350 was getting 17-20, but has dropped to 13 because it is sweating horsepower at the moment :-laf I guess I need to fix my fuel leak!

I love my 09, but had to spend a small fortune to get it to be trouble free an get decent mileage... #@$%! EPA!!!

My 90 D250 (now Greenleaf's) got 20-24. My 93 D350 gets 14-16. I've tried a bunch of stuff, but can't get better. I really liked that 3. 07 rear end.
