I love my new 05. The mileage, power, and handling are all much better than the 99. However when my son comes home with the old 99 I sure do miss the sound. What does the 3rd gen sound like without the muffler?

I know the feeling , i love the sound of the 2 gen trucks. There where times when it was too loud . One example was pulling into a camp ground at night , wow talk about wakin people up.

No regrets though.

Yeah I love the sound of a second generation truck myself. It's one of those things I love the way it sounds outside, but want my cab to nice and quiet. To answer your question on the straight pipe. I had one for about 8 mos. Just recently put my stock system back on, and frankly don't miss the straight pipe. Impossible to come home late at night and not wake up my neighbors, even idling down the street. The sound is awesome to diesel enthusiast, but offensive to other motorists. Lastly the drone inside the cab whilst hauling or cruising is intolerable.

I agree- the straight pipe is cool for a while, but the drone gets annoying inside the cab.

I just switched from straight pipe to MBRP duals. Will know in a day or so if that was the right choice for me.

New to TDR!:

Just got my first truck ever in December and went for a '94 Cummins. One of the first things I did was have some kids I used to have as students put on a 4" straight pipe for me. MAN, what a great sound. I pulled out that silencer ring, too. It whistles pretty good even at idle! The sucking sound when you decelerate quick is cool, too.

Hey, those newer Dodges are great, too! I see plenty with loud exhaust around here.

Proud to be a Dodge guy after growing up in a Ford house (like Ford, too, but... )

:D

Well Im going to go ahead and throw on my flame suit and say personally, my 05 sounded like a 6 cylinder jeep that had no exhaust. Just WAY to raspy sounding for my tastes... and Im 23 so youd think Id like the loud volume but no. I put on a MBRP replacement muffler and a resonator inplace of my cat and I love the sound. Inside, youd swear my exhaust is stock, outside tells you otherwise, a nice deep tone with no raspy crackling exhaust sound. These 3rd Gen motors just dont sound anything like the earlier engines do. I wish they did, but they dont. I got the video camera up and ready for "Nick05" to hear my exhaust this weekend, maybe I will find somewhere to post the video up for everyone to hear (given sound quality is good) anyway you get the point. Hope this helps! :)

How are the MBRP duals working out for you? Any drone?

Seems like many folks are having luck killing the drone by adding an additional, small muffler, into the system.

I have a Magnaflow muffler & do, definately, have the drone, especially, when towing uphill in the 2200 rpm range. The sound FILLS the cab of the truck. However, it's not that often that I am in that situation.

Some people seem to be very sensitive to different sounds. I took my Duramax buddy for a 300 mile ride & by the time we got back, he had a headache & swore he would never ride in my truck again. I've driven it across country & had no problems. I even roll the windows down, with the radio off, just to listen to the exhaust note.

I am not sure what this "drone" sounds like! Guess I'll have to do at least a temp straight pipe setup to find out... ... . If its anything like that "buffering" sound when you have the windows open wrong..... I will HATE it... .

I remember riding in dads old 59 Emeryville as a kid. 205 Cummins twin stick with a 5" straight stack. Was always music to me as a kid in the cab of that ole truck. Would love to replicate that sound... ...

Sold my 2001 to a friend of mine...

Everytime he pulls in next to me, the last thing I miss is the noise... It was a great truck though... :D
