today i took my 95 cummins in to have my new 215hp pump installed, the owner shocked me when he said he would have left the stock pump on the truck and that i was basicly wasting my money doing this.

The 160hp pump has 290,000 + miles on it and i had installed a 3k gsk, 100 plate, 191 dvs, and a afc spring kit. the 215hp pump i want to install will have the gsk and the plate out of the old pump.

Did i waste alot of mone in doing this or am i just feeling buyers remorse? the bd super b turbo will be here soon and id like to have the truck together to see the difference in pumps with the stock hx35/14. any advice should help, thanks

I don't know what you paid for your 215 pump or to have it installed but if you're going to keep your truck awhile and want to make some power with it I think you're making the right choice. At higher HP levels the truck will run better and feel healthier and likely get better MPG than you would with the 160 pump. If you're not going beyond the low 300hp range then it probably wouldn't be worth it.

I don't know what cam plate you have in the 160 pump but it may not be a good match for the 215. Take a look at the chart at the bottom of this page 94-98 Dodge Ram TST Power Kit without Video

Joe Donnelly did a write up on the HP differences between the different pumps and the difference with the same modifications the results were pretty impressive something like 100hp at least.

thanks for the replys, I got the pump installed yesterday and the mechanic took it for a spin and guess what happened, the timing gear spun, got to tear down the front of the motor now and put in a new gear. . . damn, it sounded expensive.

i cant see how he said it wasnt a good choice, in a stock 215 and a 100 plate it should be around 330 as per piers guide. i like to think about it like a gas engine, you can build a small block chevy to make 500hp with a lot of go fast parts but a big block will do the same almost by accident, just my opinion.

I doubt you need a new gear if the timing slipped. what did he torque the pump nut to? was the shaft and gear clean? I mean repeated brake parts cleaner and compressed air clean. any oil residue on the shaft or gear and the timing will slip. where are you having this work done?

If he installed the pump for you then he would have had to time it meaning he's the last one to touch the gear on the pump. I'd think fixing this should be on his dime depending on what your agreement with him was. He may be trying to BS you into thinking it's something you need to pay for.

well i went to see if the truck was done today, he still had to tune it, so asked him for an approx quote. . . get this, unless he was screwing with me, around 1500!!! this is a very reputable shop too, and somewhat of a friend of mine (used to be friend now). ill see what the real bill is tomorrow. i really hope he doesnt read this before hi writes up the bill, lol
