Aluminum head????????????

The county government that I work for, just bought this Cat. Generator. As you can see this is a big one. According to what I was told it puts out about 3000 horses at 1800 rpm. It holds 110 gal oil and consumes approx. 125 gal. per hr of diesel. Since it would not fit in my truck, I was trying to make a dealer with public works so that I could lite it off once.

Looks like a 3516, is that it? Boy the diesel gets a little higher rating. The natural gas units only get around 1340 Bhp at 1400 Rpm. The only models to go to 1800 Rpm are the 3400 series, and its surely bigger than that. Is this a new series for Cat?? My manuals and sales brochures don't show that rating... .

The numbers may be wrong because I didn't get them off of it. It is a 16 cylinder, working rpm's is 1800. And I am sure that the installer said that it would produce 3000 horses. I just came back from taking a look at the control board and transformer, its just as impressive. This unit will feed enough power for the whole county government center. And a price tag of $500,000

Ask Chad Sheets to give you some information on this engine. He works at cat and builds these 3500 and 3600 series kittens. I have only seen the 3500 series and it is really impressive. The fuel knock alone is really sharp and loud at an idle. Kinda gives me a little W#@D if you know what i mean.

well I found some specs on these engines it does not give the specific engine but it just gives the series, since the 3516 is the biggest 3500 series it will be the top end of the HP.
APPLICATION / HP
Industrial / 680-2000
Marine / 600-3000
Petroleum / 680-2045
Gas / 430-1340

The 3600 series:

Industrial / 1998-7260
Marine / 2000-9660
Petroleum / 1998-6598
Gas / 1165-4700

Well I'm unable to find the bore and stroke of these engines if anybody knows let us know.

The bore and stroke of the 3500 is 6. 7" X 7. 5"

The 3600's are square at 11. 812" (conversion from metric)

The engine in that photo is too small to be a 3600, those engines are about 6' tall to the middle of the head from the sump. It looks about the size of a 3500.

I look at gas powered drivers every day, I do condition monitoring/troubleshooting for the Oil and Gas Industry.

Just looking in my mechanic's diesel manual, how about this: a picture of and how to remove a 32 ton crank shaft from a very large diesel engine. I want that engine in my RAM #ad

I work in the NORAD power plant. We have 36,000 CI (14' bore 21' stroke) turbocharged Enterprise eights producing 2800 horsepower at 360 RPM at 7200 feet.

I'll see if I can get a picture to work on here...

Hey crash, I took a tour through Norad a few years ago, and we went by one of those engines, WOW, they had a piston out ,,,,,, it was enormus !! Hate to see what would happen if the water seperator broke and a chug of water went into the injection pump !!

I just heard and felt our new generator run for the first time since it was installed. WOW!!!, it was definitely an ear full. Also the tech had a laptop connected to it monitoring its vitals. It showed the EGT's for each bank of cylinders, and they were about 390-415, oil pressure was 108 psi, and fuel pressure was 90 psi.

I've got a hunch that the frame rails on our trucks would not hold it! Some one around here said that it weighed about 40,000. . I'm not sure. But I do know that it is sitting on a 3' thick slab of concrete.

Those engines are made in Lafayette, IN. CAT Plant. I've delivered stuff to CAT's Morton Grove IL foundry and seen engine block castings for big V-12's & V-16's sitting around. The block castings were bigger than my whole semi tractor. #ad

Cats are big, but EMD's are even bigger. There 20 cylinder puts out 4,500 HP at 904RPM and they have a new 16 cylinder that puts out 6,340HP. These are all used in Locomotives, Tug Boats and Oil rig power supplies along with municipalities.

Here's the latest news on my counties similar generators, they have since decided to purchase 25 more

Diesel generators' startup delayed only slightly by malfunction

Startup for eight additional diesel generators will be delayed by about a week due to a transformer malfunction in a mobile substation Friday, Project Manager Tracy Yount said today.

A small explosion and fire occurred in a transformer on a small mobile substation (15 megavolt-amps) at the PUD's diesel generating station south of Wenatchee around 4 p. m. Friday, March 23. No one was injured. PUD crews put out the fire with equipment at the site, and worked to contain or mop up about 1,500 gallons of mineral oil that leaked from the transformer.

Prior to the malfunction, the substation was undergoing testing to prepare for bringing eight more diesel generating units online this week. It now appears those units will begin operating the week of April 2, Yount said.

Thirteen units have been operating at the site, distributing power to a larger mobile substation (25 megavolt-amps). Those units were not affected by the transformer malfunction, although the 13 tripped off automatically when the problem occurred. They were returned to service one at a time beginning around 5:30 p. m. Friday.

While startup will be delayed by about a week, the total generation expected from the plant may turn out to be about the same, Yount said. That's because crews will spend this week doing work that otherwise would have required units to be taken offline. Those planned outages won't be necessary now, Yount explained, so overall production should reach projected totals.

Each diesel unit generates about 1. 6 megawatts of electricity. When all 25 are operating, the output will be about 40 megawatts.
