Lift pump?

I have a 92 3/4 ton 4-wheel drive CDT with a 5 speed and 3:54 gears. This truck only has 64000 miles on it and I bought it new in 92.

I just bought a new fifth wheel trailer and now need to do some maintaince to the truck. I know these questions will appear dumb to many of you but I would not ask if I had the answers.

I am getting a little shudder when I let out the clutch (sometimes)and the throwout bearing rattles a little (sometimes). How do I know if I need a new clutch?

Also when I take the truck in for the next valve lifter adjsutment ( I can't do own work) I am going to ask to have the pump turned up a little. How much extra power can I expect from turning up the pump. I have a KN filter and a Banks exhaust, but the truck is stock other then that. Is there anything else that I should have the mechanic do to try to get this 14 year old truck up to pulling a 10000 lb. trailer?

You may need a new clutch pretty soon. Get a pyro and boost guage first. Then have the pump turned up and move the timing. You should look for someone local from on this site or another. You would probably come across someone alot more knowledgable than a dealer. You may also want to change your governor spring also. All these little things that you can do for cheap add some real nice power. Just my . 02. Thanks Steve

Welcome Aboard, LM!

You don't have your location in your profile, but there might be someone close by that could show you how to do some of this stuff. It sure beats paying out the wazoo for work that may or may not do what you want.

The folks on this board are more than helpful and will help you with getting started.

You found the right place, these guys are way better than any service manual I ever had in my hands! Welcome to the register, best place in the world for a Cummins owner to hang out. Glen

Welcome to the site. :) My clutch has always chattered sometimes and when I replaced the clutch it still does. The only way to tell if the clutch needs replacement in these trucks is to load it down and see if it slips. I replaced mine when I bought the truck because it took ahold near the top and all previous vehicles I have owned that meant it was worn out. These trucks have a hydraulic clutch and it self adjusts and will always be at the same engagement point. I did go with a heavier clutch so all was not lost. :D I say load it up, if it doesn't slip go for it and pull away on your trailer. It will always chatter a little. You have to drive these trucks like a big rig and let the clutch out and then accelerate, do not try to slip the clutch at all. I use first gear when I pull my 5th wheel and that helps get it rolling without slipping the clutch. I agree that gauges should be your first step and then let us know where you are located so we can get someone to help you turn your pump up properly. Once again welcome. Oo.

Welcome to TDR LMcCoy. You are really in good company. Sounds like you have a warped clutch, in which case you will have to replace it and the pressure plate and thought out bearing. You may have got your truck stuck at some point in time and over heated the clutch, which sometimes may warp. Good luck. Post your signature.
