How many of us are guilty of this?

Accident - both drivers have same insurance.

Dec 11 I'll be leaving Winnemucca Nv to Costa Mesa Ca. I am moving my niece fron Costa Mesa to Portland Or using a 5 horse trailer. I plan to go Wmca to Las Vegas I15 to the 91 etc to Costa Mesa does that look like the fastest way? Also when leaving Costa Mesa should I take the 405 to the 5 and what time of day would be best to leave Costa Mesa? Thanks Steve.

According to my PC Milerthe best route is I80 west to exit 83. Take US95, turn right on NV360 south, turn right on US 6 west. In Bishop it becames US395 south. You connect to I15 south in Victorville. 43 miles to CA 91 west, 17 miles to CA 55 south to Costa Mesa. To leave take CA55 north to I5. 1618 miles total from Winnemucca to Portland. Going thru Las Vegas adds 130 miles to the trip. From my experience the best time to travel thru that area is between 9AM and 3PM, or after 7PM.

There are 2 cardinal rules when commuting through Southern California... Never Never Never get on the I-5 or the 405 never never never

They are parking lots not freeways. My brother lives in Anaheim Hills and when we go to visit we take I-5 south from Northern Calif to the 210 east to 57 south and reverse when returning home. Looking at the map in the attachment that should work perfect for you, staying off the I-5 and 405 in Southern Calif can save you HOURS behind the wheel

I realize that you will drive a few extra miles going the route I suggest but it will save you alot of misery.

I am driving down this weekend for Thanksgiving and I will be taking the above route as well.

Good luck, if you have any problems or need anything when passing through Northern Calif on the way to Oregon just P. M. me

Have a safe trip

+1 to daytripper's route. I-5 or 405 thru LA is hit or miss and towing trailer only makes it worse.

Winnemuca/Bishop/Victorville/Costa Mesa should be an easy drive unless you get some serious weather around Bishop.

I-5 Northbound is OK if you leave CostaMesa about 4AM. Once you leave downtown LA the traffic thinsout.
If we are Northbound we leave Long Beach by 5Am. Take the ^05 to the 5

Every freeway in that area is a crapshoot for moving traffic, so unless I hear about a problem on a traffic report I just go with the shortest. CA is the only place I've been that four lanes of traffic come to a crawl when the wreckage, cops and ambulance are 30 feet off the road. #@$%!

You guys are right about our traffic down here and it's only gonna get worse. Best bet is to move early morning hours or on the weekend. Looking forward to retirement and moving out of California and back to the USA.

From Costa Mesa, I would suggest going north on the 405 then merge north on the 605. the 605 dead ends into the 210, go west on the 210, and finally north on I-5. That will drop you just north of the I-5/405 merge and south of the 14 split. For a bit of peace of mind, you might want to take the truck route(as the normal car lanes get boogered at the 14 split till you get over the hill top).

It has recently started taking 3 hours from Mojave to Costa Mesa going that way in the morning during "rush hour" in a loaded semi.

55 north to 91 west to 57 north to 210 west is okay, but the am traffic on the 91 can be bad. And the 57 traffic from noon and on can be bad too at the 57/60 interchange. If you do take the 57 route, make sure to stay in the right 2 lanes as the 60 comes in from the left and leaves from the left. A lot of slow truck traffic as that is the start of a grade going east on the 60.

If you choose the 605 route, just stay in the 3rd lane from the left(not counting the car pool lane) and you wont have to switch lanes till the 210 if you decide not to.

On the 210, at the 134/210 split, be careful, almost any time of the day you go through there, it will be slow. The 134 goes straight and the 210 veers to the right.

As other have said, avoid I-5, 405, 710, and 110(nothing like taking 3 hours to travel 54 miles :( )

Hey, i grew up in Newport beach, right next to Costa Mesa and know it lie the back of my hand. I'll be more than happy to help you if you like. I now live about 30 minutes North in Redondo Beach, which is about 10 mins south of LAX. I still have family in Newport and go there often, call me if you like.

I go north to Santa Barbara with my boat once every while. If you pull something, you get on the road by 4:30 a. m. or yer skee-roo'd. After that, any time between 11 and before 2 isn't bad, so long as the day doesn't end in 'y'.

For travel, it goes two ways. If you pull something, the only way you should go is the 405N to the 5N. It's a little longer, but hazard negotiation is minimal. If you're not pulling, 405N->605N->5N, but that's only if you leave by 5:10 a. m. at the latest.

I vote against a weekend lift off unless it's before 5:30 a. m. . Idiots are on the road on the weekend, and they are much less predictable. It's much more dangerous driving week ends, than week days, if you leave mid-day. The week-day early morning drivers are all pretty predictable since they all are always going the same direction at the same times, and are actually courteous to someone pulling, since they see what you're trying get done.

I'd load up and make sure I was moving by 4:30 at the latest. I haven't had to wave my pistola around in at least 7 weeks now, since I started the early morning schedule. If it's a one time run for you, and you do the early liftoff, you can probably just leave the gun at home.
