I need oil for my 5 spd. I can't find Castrol 75-90 in any auto store. I don't wan't to special order any oil if at all possible. Is there any other brands I can use and somewhat readily available. We have a farm store that carries oil for big rigs and farm tractors. Would this type oil be ok. . -------------------------------------------------------- Jeff H 95 Ram 4x4, reg cab,k/n filter, turbo silencer missing, muffler missing, 4'' stacks, pioneer c/d,

Jeff,

Be careful what you put in your 5-speed. I believe it comes from the factory with Castrol Syntorq. I could not find it anywhere in my area (I didn't try the Dodge dealer). I put in a GL-5 synthetic (Quaker-State) but had to drain it out because it started to attack my synchronizers. I ended up with Amsoil. Had to order it, but I'm satisfied that it is a good lube and will not harm the transmission.

It is not Castrol synchromesh. It is Texaco synchromesh transmisson fluid code 1874 MTX fluid it is STF formulated specifically for use in certain manual transmissions installed by General Motors and Chrysler. It is NOT a synthetic oil it is a paraffinic base oil and has a range of -40 to 300 deg F. GM part number 12345349 and Chrysler Spec Number MS-9224
Hope this info helps. Sincerely Kevin Dinwiddie

look in your part store for castrol syntex it is 75w 80 or 80 w 90 but it is synthic and i didn't want to pay D/C PRICE I'V USED IT NOW OR 689,000,(DRAINED FACTOR FILL FRONT TO BACK TO GET RID OF ANY EXTRA MATERIAL. WHEN I TRYED OUT THE CURRANT 5 TH GEAR FIS I TORE THE transmission COMPLETY DOWN,EVERY PIECE AND DIDNT SEE ANY SIGN OF WEAR FRON THIS PRODUCT THAT WAS ABOUT 300K MI. Oil Man, I wonder if you have confused the lube for the New Venture with the Texaco lube for the Getrag used from 1989-93. On the PTO covers of the NV4500 (on the 1997 anyway) is a mandate to use Castrol Syntorq LT, GM #12346190 or Mopar #4637579. I have a bottle recently purchased that says "Synthetic Manual Trans Lubricant, 75W-85" Mopar #4874459.

Joe

Joe, you are 100% right. I was looking under the wrong trans in the book. I'm sorry and will look closer next time. OOPS, Kevin Dinwiddie

Intresting to see that things have gone full circle. The tag on the NV5600 6 speed says to use only Texaco STF 1874, Mopar 4874464. So we are back to the stuff that went in the Getrag.
