New to Auto trannys with heavy trailers?

CDL requirements?

I need some 5th wheel advise Please? I could use some opinions on which 5th wheel hitch to buy? I have looked at a lot of them and the one I’m leaning towards is the B&W Companion hitch because I need a Gooseneck hitch as well.

Does anyone have one of these hitches and do they like them?

Looks Like you need to get the Turnover ball and the Companion hitch so total would be like $800... If I was looking to do that I would seriously consider that. I like the description of the components especially the front to back ajustment so if you needed to you could put a few hundred more on the front axle... Shock absorbers... Polyurethane bushings... Sounds like a great unit... ...

I have the Pull-rite 5th hitch and it has the mounting rails on the frame and the super rails so when I remove the hitch I have a clean bed. . Looks Like the Companion is the same way... . A very good plus in My Opinion... .

Something else you might want to consider..... Go ahead and get a really good Gooseneck hitch like from B&W... then get this from http://www.popuphitch.com/rv1.htm

It bolts to your 5th wheel trailer making it into a goosneck... About the same price as the companion 5th but your truck will still only be a gooseneck... . If you are ONLY going to be hauling the the one 5th wheel, this might be another solution...

I use a B&W Turnover Ball gooseneck hitch and a Pop Up Industries RV1 adaptor for my fifth wheel. You'll find some people on this forum trashing the RV1 as unsafe. All I can say is I've never had a problem with anything. The B&W Companion 5th wheel adaptor looks to be a fine setup as well.

One thing I really like about the RV1 is that when I unhitch the 5th wheel I don't have to take anything out of the bed and it's clean. The RV1 adaptor stays attached to the trailer. I'm sure others will chime in :D . Good luck in your search.

I use and would highly recommend the B&W turnoverball gooseneck and companion 5th wheel hitch.

The problem with gooseneck adaptors that mount to 5th wheel pinboxes is that the additional leverage produces moments (torque forces) that can (and have) pull the pinbox out of the 5th wheel's frame. 5th wheel trailers are not designed to take the forces associated with a gooseneck trailer design. If you have any doubts that failures occur, it would be worth doing a search on "gooseneck adapter" on this forum as well as RV-specific forums such as iRV2.com.

The RV2 give you 9" of offset. I pulled a 5th wheel with my shortbed Chevy using an RV2 all over the country last summer. The Chevy is a 6'6" bed. I had plenty of clearance and zero problems.

Well come back and post again when the pin box starts tearing out of the 5th wheel frame. Almost all 5th wheel manufactures will not warranty the use of these products, as the 5th wheel frame is not designed for the extra torque that is transfered to the trailer frame. SNOKING

I seriously doubt that any manufacturer of 5th wheel RVs is going to say that it is okay to use a gooseneck adapter on their product.

I too loved my goose-neck adapter on my 5th wheel for several thousand mailes--------untill I hit a particularly wavy/bouncy section of highway. Yup, nearly seperated the kingpin box from the 5th wheel frame before I noticed the strange movement between the kingpin box and the trailer body. It was actually tearing the welds into; part of the weld staying on the frame and part on the kingpin box.

Bought a B&W Turnover Ball hitch and the Companion 5th hitch for my new truck. Put the Companion hitch together the other day, and all I can day is that it is significantly more heavy duty then the Reese 15k TrailBoss I had on my 2001. Haven't put the gooseneck in yet as my 2005 truck is still hiding from me, somewhere in Mexico. The "bolt on" gooseneck frame and ball setup is very heavy duty. The B&W appears to be a very high quality hitch setup... ;)

Hey Ken,

I like the B&W turnoverball also, but it isn't compatable with the superrails. I have been looking. I believe that the Diamond Hitch gooseneck is compatable with the superrails. Just a note for those who may be interested.

GO B&W

I have a B&W and I like it a lot. It is simple to hook up and un hook from the 5th wheel. And when I don't use it the bead is clear and nothing in the way. It makes a good 5th wheel and goosneck hitch.

Maybe I am missing something here, but as I see it there would be the SAME force (torque} on the trailer with either type of hitch. Pulling, backing, right or left turn, same force either hitch. I have pulled 5th. quite a lot, even with a 18' boat behind the 5th. If I had a choice it darn sure would be a ball hitch! I ask at Elkhart trailer mfg. why they made them with the 5th. (this was YEARS ago) Answer because semi were that way. Look around, construction trailers, cattle trailers, etc. are all ball hitches behind PU"s Ball hitch gives you a clean bed, less moveing parts too wear out or break. Sorry too say ,when I was pulling 5th"s there was no choice.

Dick... Think of the trailer 5th wheel hitch as a lever. When you move the hitch point down you increase the leverage on the 5th wheel hitch mounting, up in the trailer. The reason this is not a problem, with normal gooseneck trailers is that the hitch structure is beefed up to take that additional leverage. In 5th wheel trailers the hitch is not stressed to take this increased leverage load. Because of this, there is a stress on the attach/welded points that can and has made this hitch structually fail. When that happens you basically can loose the 5th wheel attachment to the hitch.

Take a look at the RV forums and do a search on this, and you will see what has happened to others. That's why, when I bought my B&W Turnball gooseneck hitch, I also purchased the "Companion 5th Wheel" hitch accessory... ;)
