Sorry for posting a non-diesel question here, but I don't know where else to post it or a more knowledgeable bunch of guys to ask.

I need a replacement carburetor for my '65 Jeep CJ-5, with 134 cid F-Head 4 cyl. engine. The original carb is a Carter YF. It may be beyond rebuilding and the only available rebuild kit does not contain the correct float needle/seat for its body.

I e-mailed Holley and they don't make a replacement for this application. The only thing I have found is JC Whitney sells a Solex carb that will interchange. I don't know anything at all about Solex. Help please!

I checked the latest Summit catalog and found nothing for my Jeep.

I never heard of quadratec... where are they?

Also, tell me more about the Weber downdraft, if possible, I don't know anything about it.

Thanks!

both Weber & Dellorto carbs are used a LOT on VW's. try some of the air cooled VW sites & I bet that you get MORE info on those carbs than you ever wanted to know.

Solex carbs were OEM on the air cooled VW's, I bet you can find info on them as well on the VW sites.

none of these carbs are very complex, they were disigned to be quite simple & to last a long time.

Can you not find a good stock carb on line? it might be simpler to find one that way. how about old Jeep places. maybe they have some ideas?

Another option would be to get/make an adapter to put a more common carb onto your manifold?

Thanks a lot, guys.

I'll do some research on these ideas and see what I can find... . I would never have thought about the VW idea!

IF... . , I end up needing or wanting to make an adapter for a later model carb, how would you suggest I go about that? As you perhaps already know, the Carter YF has only 2 mounting holes and the Jeep intake manifold has just 2 carb mounting studs on it.

I'm sure you have tried E-Bay, if not, they have just about "anything" and if they don't, keep looking as they will have.

Jim,

Making up an adaptor is not very difficult. Just need to know what the bolt spaceing is for the manifold and the new carb and what size hole is needed in the middle. Ford used a lot of single barrel Holleys with a two bolt mount on their 6 cyclinders in the 60's and 70's.
