Do any of you guys know where to find the KDP jig.

I need to do my 98 24 valve.

I used the jig back around the year 2000, to do my

12 valve. Back then we didn't know the 24 valves had

the same problem. So I have been taking a big risk for

a few years.

RBerry;

With all the accessories that you have to remove to use the jig, why not just TAB it. Your almost there. and you can check all the housing bolts in there too. There is no gasket on that engine to replace, just RTV, the gray kind. And if its been a while in mileage the crank seal might need replaced to. Four hours versus three hours of work, to do the job right and PERMANENT.

MLee;
Thanks for the suggestion, I think I am just trying to find an easy way out. The truck has 170,000 miles on it but it has no leaks. I don't know if KDP is any less likely to come loose on the Mexican non (53) block, that I feel lucky to have.

I agree. On mine one of the bolts was barley finger tight. Glad I tabbed it, rather then use the jig.

Berry, this far down the road 160,000 just do it right and tab it. Its hard to know the condition inside the cover. An other 30 minutes and your there. Its your choice but the bolts inside can and do tear thing up just as bad if not worse. Specially the one you would use as the tab bolt.

I think I would remove the cover and look. you might have a revised gear case. if you have the old style case the case is only 1/4 in. thick where the pin goes.
a revised gear case is 1/2 thick where the pin goes and the pin hole is stepped or smaller so the pin can't fall out.
so far I have checked 18 98. 5-to02's. just 3 of those had old style cases and needed tabbed. those 3 were 98. 5's. as far as I can find out cummins revised
the gear case in 99, but some old style cases could have been used as far as 02. the only way to tell for sure is remove the cover.
although I used to make the jigs and sell them (I no longer do) I found you can use a 1st. gen jig on a 24 v
98. 5-02,drill a 5/16 hole thru the case using a small amount of air in dipstick tube to blow out drill cuttings . then use a bore scope to see if you have revised or not.

Loctite all the case to block bolts you can. You can do 4 of them. The fifth is behind the cam gear but a bent wrench lets you get on it and tighten it.

If the pin is close to falling out you will finish knocking it out when you use the kit and you wont know till it is too late
