Arrrgggggg - Mrs Doc is trying to kill me! !

Pat Kemp-Send me PM please

Heres the drill.

My son's 350 started blowing the gasket on the oil filter.

Is there a pressure bypass on the oil pump? I know there is one on the oil filter housing and it is working.

I can't figure out why there is soooooooo much pressure.

Thanks in advance

Tom

Tom

seams I remember reading about a new filter that has better integrity to prevent the gasket from blowing out??? Does he by chance have one of the old inaddiquate filters in use?

Not familar with Chevys but most engines I have worked on had a pressure relief valve in the oil pump. put a gauge on it and check pressure. the double gasket on the filter (should only be one) mount is a good idea to check out, its easy to leave the old gasket on the engine by accident.

Double Gasket

I had pulled the filter to ckeck already. Only one gasket.

I thought there was a pressure relief valve on the pump but wanted to verify. Guess what I'll be doing today.

Thanks for all your help

First check that the filter is in fact the one that matches the engine, sometimes folks take the number off an old filter, which may be incorrect and perpetuate the mistake. Fram filters have a reputation for failure, but this could be because they are the most sold filter in the US and have more chances for failure. Try a Wix or Napa Gold for higher quality.

My car has very high oil pressure when its cold. It always has even though this is the third motor rehash in it. On a cold start 3000RPM=120 psi oil pressure. This is using a stock oil pump and 10/40 oil. On to my point lol. I had swelled some fram filters before. Started comparing old ones and new ones, the old ones were much more round lol. But I never had trouble with oil leaking from the gasket at all? Since the car is not a daily driver anymore I use the fram HP-1 race filters. They have a much thicker case and only cost a few $$ more.

On the 350s you can remove the aluminum piece that has the oil filter threads on it. I don't believe that is an oil pressure relief on the filter housing but its more of a bypass in case of a clogged oil filter. I would replace the aluminum piece just because its easy. Maybe the threads are jacked and its not going on straight. Just my . 02

Problem Solved

Thanks everyone for your help.

I had inspected the by-pass valve where the filter mounts and it was working fine.

Pulled the oil pump and removed the spring in the pressure relief valve and found the piston was stuck. Replace the oil pump and all is well.

Thanks again
