This past weekend, my truck started pulling hard to the left, when I'd apply any pressure to the brake pedal. . No noise, nothing. . Just an insane reaction upon brake application. I "assumed" that the caliper had seized onto the slide pins. So, today, I decided to take it apart and investigate.

Taking the caliper off (which was quite stuck on there), the pistons were fully extended, and only the boot seals were keeping them from falling out and onto the ground. The bottom-most piston was seized up, in this extended position.

Looking at the pads next, I noticed the inboard pad was gone, with only the steel plate remaining. . The outboard pad was fine, almost unused looking.

Then, I noticed something weird about the rotor. HOLY CARP! No damned wonder my brakes were jacked!!

I've never seen this happen before, and it appears it's been this way for some time, so I thought I'd share.

note: I've only recently purchased this truck a few weeks ago, maybe a month, but have only been driving it for a couple weeks. . I can't believe I missed this when I had the wheels off last week. .

I also found a pair of needle-nosed vice grips semi-pinching the brake hose, too, up by the framerail. The previous owner must've been a real dillweed...

I saw something similar, years ago. A car my son (age 17) bought pulled when you stepped on the brakes. The front disks were unvented, and one was so worn the entire disk separated from the hub. So looking at it from the side it looked OK until you saw the disk didn't rotate when the wheel turned! The disk was considerably more worn toward the center, which is why it separated from the hub.

Rogan that has to be the oddest sight I've ever seen concerning brakes. How on God's green earth could it wear like that, it's hard to fathom. The previous owner must have been a first grader!

Well at least you got a pair of vise grips out of the deal!!! I found the same thing on the rear of an 03 chevy pickup this past winter. I guess the rotor rusts on the inside until it gets weak enough that one disc breaks off under a hard stop.

Yeah, I've got no idea. but it is obvious the P. O. knew there was a problem. .

Yes, I did get a pair of vice grips out of the deal! LOL

The weird thing is, there's no inner rotor pieces to be found anywhere. . It's like it "wore" off, rather than broke off.

i have seen this several times on dodge servie trucks that carry a lot of weight ALL the time.

i wont let my brakes get this bad, well i hope not i try to keep a close eye on things!

yeah, well, I'll be going through the rest of them this week(end) sometime. This was an eye-opener, and I'm kinda upset with myself for not catching it earlier. especially since it sat idle in my driveway for a few weeks prior to me driving it...

If you told me this happened I would not have believed it. Amazing... probably provided a good friction surface however.

seen it a few times on different types of vehicles, seen a solid disc get cut off the hat when the pad backing plates pinched together on the rattle clip and angled together from extreme wear \|/

Not flaming you, but I can't believe you bought the truck without giving it a good inspection.

I can see missing the rear discs on a dually, or drums, but to miss the front??? We need to talk.

:--)

psssttt... hey, sticks. . I bought the truck for $2000. should I have been more picky?

It started (which he said it wouldn't, due to needing an IP), and had all the options/traits that I was looking for (QC, 6spd, AC, 24v, 4wd, etc. ) So, for 2 G's, I wasn't gonna hang around too long. It became a snatch-n-haul-*** type of purchase :-laf

Replace the hose since it was pinched, when you replace the caliper and rotor. Still a great deal on the truck, lucky you didn't have a wreck. check other stuff for similar "quality" of work!

yeah, I ordered a hose. I've already replaced the caliper and rotor, though. All other corners look fine. I can show pics of other "handy fixes" I've found on the truck, thusfar...

New feed/return line connections, since the sock filter was clogged up (notice the use of silicone to close off the factory ports in the sender assemby:

Some jerry-rigged fuel filter INSIDE the tank, replacing the sock filter assembly. NOTE: the filter was being used 'backwards', btw. That's also a portion of the crap I knocked out of the filter. .
