I went to the grand Canyon last week. ( 1700 miles round trip)

As usual, i always wait until I get on I-5 to find cheap fuel, to top off my aux. tank.

I got into Needles,Ca( Damn hot place) and my transfer pump, Aux. tank to main tank, went on the blink!.

Now i was forced to get fuel each time my main tank went low, which i haven't had to do for some time.

Usually, I just stop at a rest area while the wife has a smoke and top off the main tank, and primarily stop at truck stops every 1000 miles or so to fill the aux. tank.

Trying to find a gas station , which is set up for 36' 5th wheel trailers in small towns, when your fuel gauge in showing the little yellow pump,

( the idiot light that flashes and says, hey dildo, your almost out of fuel)

is most frustrating. . I was glad to get home and fix it so i can pass those $1. 50+gal fuel stops and go back to geting the $1. 25-1. 30 a gal at truck stops.

Those of you who have to stop every 300-400miles with a long trailer in tow should get an aux. tank.

They are great and I sure missed mine this last weekend. . :)

Main tank

I know thats not far, but at 10-11 MPH, towing a 15,000 5th wheel, that ( 36 gallon main tank)=360-400 miles. I know its not much compared to others who get 20-25 MPG(??) towing 20,000 trailers, but I'm happy. .

Hell, my old 350 CI chevy 1/2 ton empty could only get 10MPG on a good day. . LOL

The Same WeekEnd !!

Bugout,

That was the same weekend GunnyS and I broke down. It was 116 in Phoenix that Friday. Made your eyes go foggy for a few seconds. I now know what a Blast Furnace feels like.

400 Miles, now that gettin down the road on the main tank. 330 is the most I've seen running at 65-70 with my 5fer. I took 33. 4 gallons on that stop. I can see why you liked your aux tank.

Dave

same mileage

Dhawthorne, you get the same MPG as me.

When the yellow pump light comes on, its time to put fuel in. It usually has 5-6 gallons, even when it starts to touch the red zone.

So calculating, 33 gallons, 330 miles etc, it comes out to 10-11 MPG.

Now, the truth comes out. My 400 mile tank, was actually coming out of Reno on I-80, which is coasting downhill for 10-20 miles, which bumped me up to 11. 5 or so.

other then that, 10-11 MPG. :)

DRR-24v

What happened to you guys? Hell, i though it was hot at the GRAND CANYON!!!90 somthing degree's.

I would have melted in 116 and a broke down CTD!

I enjoy the 1200 mile fill up's also... my 4x4 gets about 16 MPG +/- a mile depending on foot pressure. . fuel back in midwest [Muncie] was 1. 16 was happy to fill along the way before we got home state... started back up in Utah

BugOut-We Are Innocent !!

We somehow put 27 1/2 gallons of Texacos Unleaded Fuel in the Dodge. Needless to say, it wouldn't run no more. :D :D :D :D :D

I guess all's well that ends well.

BugOut-It Is Up And Running !

After tow bills, motel room, car rental, new fuel filters, bleeding everything, etc, GunnyS wound up spending $1400 bucks on this stupid little mistake ! Nothing was hurt, truck runs like a charm.

YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!

And I was complaining about a measly $70 for a transfer pump. .

Glad to hear all is well.

Just for info. When my fuel light comes on I still have 9 gallons in the tank. The trip computer which counts down the miles to empty is set to read 0 miles left with 3 gallons in the tank. My 96 fuel light would come on with 3 gallons left. The computer in my truck is within 3-4 10ths of what I put in when I get fuel. I heard thats better than most. The MPG indicated when driving is useful for picking the right gear for mileage if you want. I really need either an EZ or a 4:10 rear for towing my 5fer. Gonna try the EZ first.

Dave

DHawthorne-Manual or Auto Trans?

I have the 6 speed and adding only the EZ allows me to stay in 6th pulling my 5th wheel where before I had to downshift. There is nothing in Florida you couldnt pull in top gear. ;)

DDR-24V Look above to my previous post on this subject . You find want the truck is and 5fer. I appriciate you mentioning that the EZ did the job for you. I thoght it would, since many over the road tractors run 3:54 gears, and have the HP to pull them. Without the HP it won't work.

4:10's are a little high strung in side the cab with the ISB. I could get use to it. Got use to the quiet with my 96 CTD with the 3:54 rear.

Had a 85 Surburban with a 6. 2 in it with 4:10 (2500) that would pull a flat 30ft trailer with 16 screw jacks at 650Lbs each at 11 mpg. That engine was up around 3000 rpm at 65 mph. No overdrive with a HD400. Got 15. 5 light.

Thanks again

Dave

DHawthorne- Torque

Dave,

I was not especially after H/P adding the EZ. I was Tickled Pink with the Torque increase. It pulls much stronger from 1400 to whatever while pulling the trailer. I actually have tried to shift from 6th to a higher gear a few times as it felt like I was running in 5th. The EZ and the PacBrake are the 2 things I couldn't live without. JMO

I was amazed

Bug Out,

I missed your reply to my post, actually I was amazed that you could go so far. I get about 10 mpg towing, but by the time I've gone 250 mi my gauge reads E. It usually only takes 25 gal so I should have at least a good 8 more (80 mi), but I'm a chicken. I sure hate having to start looking for diesel every200 mi or so.

got at least 11 gal's left

You have at least 70-80 safe more miles to go. I've checked my mileage so many times, i have confidence that i can go that far, knowing at the worst i get 10MPG.

Transfer Flow Mid-Ship Tank

I had one of the Transfer Flow mid-ship replacement tanks installed. It is spec'd at 54 gallons with an additional 10% for fuel expansion. Holds about 60 gallons, if you top it off. They provided a chart of how many gallons remain in the tank, when my fuel gauge readst "F", 3/4, 1/2 1/4 and "E". At the "E" mark, I still have 7 gallons remaining.

It's really nice having the flexibility of a 750 mile range when towing and 1000+ miles without the trailer. You can always make it to reasonably priced fuel. When I'm in town, I refuel when the gauge reads 1/2 just to keep the tank reasonably full.

One of the best things I have done to my truck. Don't know why I waited so long to get one installed.
