The sound I thought was my transmission isn't probably my transmission according to Dario my friend the mechanic. He heard it and said nope... something else. Doesn't sound like whistle, more like a grindy howl rubbing sound. Or something like that. Does it when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd with overdrive off when pulling my boat, and going up hill. I'm working it.

And so I've been crawling under the truck, on the truck, sticking my camera in nooks and crannies and making images of anything that looks in the least bit interesting or even a bit boring.

I have a intake air leak tester I built but haven't hooked it up yet. Going to try and do that tomorrow.

In the meantime I found these interesting things.

Boot going past A/C hose looks like it has a hole.

Injector is leaking. This image was after I cleaned it up, but you can see the weepy bits here and there.

Turbo blades and intake are rather filthy. This normal for an EGR equipped CA truck?

I thought they ran the egr back into the intake manifold.

I have heard of KN filters let sand get thru but not regular dirt.

Could your turbo bearing be ready to bite the dust?

Yep, you are right. And yep, this truck came with a K&N that fits the stock airbox. I think I'm going to get a Big Honkin Air Filter and chuck the K&N.

I hope the turbo bearing isn't ready to bite the dust. Trying to figure out if I can safely clean the turbo fan blades.

Hose sure looks like it has a hole. I loosened up the clamps and rotated it around, and I see cloth and beyond. Don't suppose anything will stick to this hose, so will have to order one.

So many little things to fix on this truck.

If you want to go all out on the boots( I think Mr Bobs sells just sells the boots. I know he sells the whole set of turbo hoses and boots) go for Mr. Bobs stuff.

I think I read where you bend the AC line away from the boot a little.

Leak or Two Update

I built a air pressure tester for the intake, and found no leaks on any of the hoses including the one with worn spot.

What I did find however was a leak on the intake horn gasket. Pulled off the intake horn and put some rtv on both side of the gasket and put it back together. No more leak there, but then found a leak in the large intake manifold.

I used my 12v pump to fill up the system, and it never did go above 25psi. Used soapy water sprayed all over the place and detected both leaks.

Now I need to order up a gasket for the manifold an another one for the intake horn. Last two I got from Geno's sure are fragile, with the gray coating literally falling off.

Filled up my tank from the 55gallon drum of B100 BioDiesel today for the first time. Used a military OD Green pump from 1973, a local fellow gave me. Worked great. Wonder how long the seals are going to last before they croak.

WHEN i had a K&N airfilter and seen this exact same thing for the first time i did safely clean the turbo. on the intake horn take off the boot and make sure that no air can enter the engine coming from the turbo. Next start the truck and then spray parts cleaner in the blades of the turbo while its spinning. i did this on a cold engine. i would say DO NOT do it on a hot one. then make sure to let the engine run long enough to blow any of the parts cleaner through the air to air cooler. I let the parts cleaner go through that to try and clean the inside of that as well... .

hope that help and maybe other member have more ideas. seemed to work pretty good for me.

needless to say i no longer have the crappy K&N in my truck
