:{ We were about 400 miles away after a long weekend of off roading. After putting it back in 2 wd and just pulling back onto the pavement with my 19K#'r and excellerating to 2k rpms I shifted my auto into the second gear position and heard a VERY noticable "CLUNK". That was all she wrote. I rolled to a stop at the side of the road. NO NOTHING, except a very nice sounding Cummins engine sitting there running.

I've read threw this web side about the HD 241 being a weak transfer case. I'm about to find out if that's my problem. I have a fresh later model t-case from an 03 (?) and I think it's called a 271 but not sure. It's about 2. 5" longer than my 241. Has anyone done this conversion? What needed to be changed. What about the drive shafts on my 4X?

Some time back a TDR member called my as part of the Help section. I helped him and so I called him this time. He dropped everything and brought a trailer big enough to transport my 3500 and off roader home. Other friends came from home to transport my camper and another friend (who was already out there) transported my car trailer. GOD where would we be without friends.

I have never read of a 241 breaking a shaft. The main problem with them is the snap ring that breaks and lets the rear bearing move out of place and stuff gets messed up. I would vote for the trany input shaft being broken as that's not uncommon for the autos. Glad you got everything back home. I will be riding through your area tomorrow with a 5ver headed for Riverside. Would be today but I figured I would wait out this nasty wind at home.

If you put the transmission in Park, does the truck still roll? I would also vote for transmission input or output shaft. If park works, then it's probably the input shaft. If park doesn't work, then probably the output shaft.

If it is the transfer case, then going to a 271 is possible, and works out pretty well. You do have to do some mods, but very minimal. The additional length is not a problem, but it is quite a bit wider. It is a very tight fit. The transfer case shift linkage will have to be modified. On a 98 I believe that the speedometer input is in the diff housing, so that shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure that the tail shaft on your 241 doesn't have a sensor in it, because the 271 doesn't have a spot for it.

Hope this helps...

Paul

P. S. There is a thread on here from BigBadDodge, about doing the 241 to 271 conversion.

Well, I was under the ole girl last night and it looks like the t-case is fine. :{ With the trans in park and neutral the t-case preforms just like it should. So, now I'm bettin' money that it's something in the trans (No ***** Sherlock:rolleyes: ) I have another friend who is a trans man and I'm going to see if he'll bring over some gauges to see where the problem lays. It could be the torque converter or input shaft. I doubt the output shaft because the trans will lock up the vehicle in park and the parking mechanism is at the back of the trans. I'm seriously thinking of converting to a stick.

What's the toughest trans out there, I hope it's a 6 speeder. I need more gears because of these 4. 10s.

Thanks for all the info gentlemen. Save trip out here CP98. The winds have laded down now. If I get this thing fixed we're suppost to go to Moab in May for the Bronco Safari. Hope I make it.

The NV5600 6 speed has less of an overdrive than the 47RE. That is more RPM's at a given speed with the same rear gear ratio. (OD verses 6th) SNOKING

I don't think that the 6 speed will give you any more high end gear than a 5 speed. The 6 speed just has another gear in the middle. I had one in my 2001 truck and it was a really nice transmission. It's huge compared to the 5 speed.

BTW, these t-cases are tough. I blew a hole in the side of mine this winter and it still drove well enough to get parts and even worked in 4wd when I pulled it into the barn to repair.

I talked with the trans shop that installed my ATS automatic some years ago. He said that it's not uncommon to break the input shaft. He also told me that they now make a hardined shaft. Sooooooooo, Tuesday I'll trailer it down to have that and another 5 start torque converter installed.

Thanks for all the information. As usual you guys have a wealth of knowledge they we can tap into in times like this.

Morning MARK!!! You're right, good thing. I'm used Brad's Ford pickup (you remember that) to pickup that other goose neck flat bed trailer. Tuesday I'll be taking Bart (Big *** Red Truck) down to Bellflower. They've order up a new hardened input shaft and new upgraded torque converter. I did take a look at drive line universals and the rear one was starting to show wear marks, so I'm going to replace all three of them. They're coming up on ten years old and no lubrication so new greaser's going in.

I'll be sending you the information on that trailer I'm using if you're interested in a shorter on

Thanks again for all your help and glad to see you got home safe

John.

No problemo! Just glad to be able to return the favor! Got in and tucked into bed at 4AM, slept till 2!!!! :-laf

Snoking hit the nail on the head! I snapped the input shaft. I got the truck back with a new billet, hardened, one piece input shaft. It was expensive, but not as much as the cost of getting it home. I did up grade the torque converter to the 5 star ATS converter at the same time. I was hoping the t-case went as it would have been cheaper (I have a 271 on the work bench), but such was not the case. Anyway, the ole 12 valver is back to working like a mule for me. Thanks for all the inputs.
