:{ We were about 400 miles away after a long weekend of off roading. After putting it back in 2 wd and just pulling back onto the pavement with my 19K#'r and excellerating to 2k rpms I shifted my auto into the second gear position and heard a VERY noticable "CLUNK". That was all she wrote. I rolled to a stop at the side of the road. NO NOTHING, except a very nice sounding Cummins engine sitting there running.

I've read threw this web side about the HD 241 being a weak transfer case. I'm about to find out if that's my problem. I have a fresh later model t-case from an 03 (?) and I think it's called a 271 but not sure. It's about 2. 5" longer than my 241. Has anyone done this conversion? What needed to be changed. What about the drive shafts on my 4X?

Some time back a TDR member called my as part of the Help section. I helped him and so I called him this time. He dropped everything and brought a trailer big enough to transport my 3500 and off roader home. Other friends came from home to transport my camper and another friend (who was already out there) transported my car trailer. GOD where would we be without friends.

This would probably get better coverage in the 2nd gen section.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I can't speak intelligently about the relative strength of the 241 and 271 transfer cases. If the 271 is longer, I assume you'll need to have a custom rear driveshaft made. The front shaft may not properly mate with the transfer case, either.

If you need photos of 271s installed in a 3rd gen, let us know.
