Should the Fuel / Lift Pump be in the Tank?

Well, I fought the truck home today. (God I hate shutting down to shift to first/reverse. )

It seems that something I probably messed up while installing my SB sprung dual disc clutch, has finally come to bite me. The engagement point has suddenly gone from a normal place, to barely disengaged with the pedal pressed the floor. *grumble* At least it doesn't slip lol.

Hopefully by the end of the week I'll have a spot in my shop to take down the trans/xfercase AGAIN. And hopefully the whole clutch won't be garbage. What a fine b'day present this is. :{

I'll update with pics when I have it all apart. Maybe a little failure analysis will then commence.

Leaking hydros?

In regards to shifting into gears; the way it is right now, if I put it in 4th and then quickly slam it to first or reverse, it'll take up. But, with foot all the way on the clutch in first, the truck ever so gradually creeps.

I thought it might be the hydraulics at first, but the pedal is (very) firm, as it was before, and I pulled the slave out of its little hidey hole and it is dry and moves smoothly. I even tried taking the plastic shim off the slave's mounting eyes to get a bit more "throw," nothing changed.

One thing I have noticed is that when I shut down the truck, I no longer hear the "rattle" of the clutch shaking back and forth.

I really really hope its something stupid.

Just had this exact thing happen to me. Turns out that three of th eeight bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel snapped, thereby making the plate stay engaged in the areas where the bolts were. Called Pete and he fixed me up with a new plate and bolts. Clutch disc was still ok. At first we thought it was hyd. so we replaced them. Pedal felt better, but still no disengagement. That's what lead to pull the transmission and look at clutch.

All better now. Pete took good care of me!

Well, I finally had the space in my shop to get the truck apart again and the results don't look terribly encouraging.

First, 2 of the 4 lever arms on the pressure plate are farther in than the other 2. This pretty much nails the reason for the incomplete release.

Secondly, there seems to be 2 bad spots on the brass facing of the flywheel. One spot is scorched and when you tap on it, it seems like its de-laminated from the rest of the facing. Another spot has a crack between the two rivets that hold the facings into the flywheel.

On the positive swing, the facings of the clutch packs arent bad at all, and the floater looks good as does the face of the pressure plate. Also, the release bearing and the pilot bearing are both smooth and nice.

Pictures of the clutch are in the following flickr link.

Monday, I'll give Peter a call and see what to do.
